Johnny English Strikes Again Movie Review - The Spy With Luck

A retired agent is called back for the service when the data of all the active undercover agents get compromised. The third instalment in the franchise is fun at some parts but mostly runs out of steam.

Cast - Rowan Atkinson, Ben Miller, Olga Kurylenko, Jake Lacy, Emma Thompson

Directed By - David Kerr

Genre - Action, Comedy

Johnny English Strikes Again is the sequel to the 2011 film Johnny English Reborn and is the third film in the franchise starring Rowan Atkinson as a dumber and funnier spy version of James Bond going by the name "English, Johnny English". Directed by David Kerr, Johnny English Strikes Again brings back the much beloved "Mr Bean" on screen and this time with an excuse of a cyber attack. The data of all the undercover agents get compromised, and the agency turns to English as he is the only ray of hope. A retired English busy "scouting" the children in a school happily accepts the offer and returns to save the day.

I think the first movie in the franchise was hilarious and the second one had a promising start but became progressively worse. The third one actually reminded me of the first film as the plot and even the scenes to some extent are almost identical in both the movies. Of course, we also get Bough (Ben Miller) here from the first instalment whose presence feels more like nostalgia as the film tries to be like the first one which came out in 2003. Even the characters in this film can be replaced from the first movie like the character of Lorna Campbell can be replaced with the character of Ophelia (Olga Kurylenko), and the main villain in this film is also somewhat similar to Pascal Sauvage, the antagonist from the first instalment. Indeed, some parallels can be drawn here.

But sadly, this film too doesn't get even close to the 2003 film; it's definitely somewhat better than the second one. There are some scenes which were quite funny in the movie and will make you laugh but mostly its the character played by Rowan Atkinson that mostly gets the job done.

Johnny English is not so different when compared to Mr Bean. The only difference if you see is that English is an "MI7" agent while Bean is a regular guy who does quirky things and both of them make you laugh. Rowan Atkinson performs both the roles perfectly, and I cannot think of any other actor playing the character of English or Bean, he is irreplaceable. His partner-in-crime Bough is there to support him and rescue him out of embarrassing situations, and Ben Miller does an excellent job at playing the character. Olga Kurylenko as the sexy, kick-ass woman is here what the other women have been in the previous English films - smart, hot and love interest of the main character.

Your love for Rowan and his antics will play a significant part while watching this film. If you love him, you will enjoy watching him for the whole duration of 89 minutes as he does his comical things on screen which include and are not limited to him going around beating people in the shops, on the streets and the bus all the while by wearing a VR headset, a sequence which was amusing but at the same time felt more staged than natural. Also in one scene before diving into the "water", he bids farewell to a character and lands flat on his back. As mentioned earlier, Rowan is fantastic, and if you love him, you will have a good time with all these sequences and the movie. However, if you are not a big fan of the character, then you will probably get tired after some time and will find yourself getting bored with it as the humour feels forced and after a time predictable and scenes incomplete.

Johnny English Strikes Again is amusing in parts but mostly has nothing new to offer with it. Rowan Atkinson filled my childhood with humour, and I genuinely want to see him do better things than this film. After all, it's because of him that this film gets saved from being a complete turn off and an uninteresting ride.
