Manmarziyaan Movie Review - The Heart Knows
Directed by Anurag Kashyap, Manmarziyaan is a love triangle set in the modern times focusing on the turbulent relationships between the couples.
Cast - Abhishek Bachchan, Vicky Kaushal, Taapsee Pannu
Directed By - Anurag Kashyap
Genre - Romance, Comedy, Drama
A fiery headed Rumi (Taapsee Pannu) and a cool-headed Vicky (Vicky Kaushal) are madly in love with each other. He comes jumping from the highest rooftops and quietly enters her house to make passionate love. In the entire village, only these two free-spirited couples have there hair coloured which signifies there respective moods. She is fierce like red, and he is cool as blue. Together they meet and fire up like a nuclear bomb destroying everything between them. Enter Robbie (Abhishek Bachchan), a banker from the foreign land who becomes the third wheel in this relationship. He is calm and supportive in every way possible. So, who does Rumi finally choose?
With Manmarziyaan, Director Anurag Kashyap adds another love story to his filmography. He is not new in this genre as he had previously made films like the 2009 widely acclaimed Dev.D. It was my faith in Kashyap that forced me to go into the theatre to watch this film.
Let's first talk about the performances in the film. Taapsee Pannu owns her character and lives it. Her every action and dialogue seems natural and it feels like she had lived the life of Rumi. I have nothing new to say about Vicky Kaushal as we all know he is a fantastic actor. He never disappoints and with every film proves his worth as a highly capable actor. Abhishek Bachchan returning after a gap of two years is a welcome presence in the movie. It was good to see him after a long time, and he did give an excellent performance in the film.
Since it all boils down to the girl's decision, we mostly follow Rumi throughout the film. But she has a dynamic mind which shifts between Vicky and Robbie. This shift provides for an engaging first half which turns repetitive and tiring in the second half. The scene towards the end where Robbie and Rumi talk to each other while walking towards her home may remind you of Richard Linklater's Before trilogy starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy.
The music by Amit Trivedi is always charming, and he gives some of the memorable soundtracks for this film. Some of the songs even tell us about the feelings of the characters.
Kashyap uses twins in the movie for a motif which subtly reminds us that every person has two sides to him, like a coin with a head and a tail.
The characters are properly fleshed out, and the actors do full justice to them. Kashyap is the winner here as he proves his directorial skills to be of first-rate and his ability to direct any film at hand. If only the runtime would have been a little shorter and the movie more crisply edited, Manmarziyaan could have been a memorable film for the generations and a highly appealing fare from the beginning to the end.
