The Predator Movie Review - The Hunt Is Stretched

The Predator(s) come on Earth in a hunt for evolution and are counter-attacked by a group of people who by any means want to stop it from causing mayhem.

Cast - Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan- Michael Kay, Olivia Munn, Thomas Jane, Alfie Allen, Sterling K. Brown

Directed By - Shane Black

Genre - Sci-Fi, Thriller, Action

The tagline of the film goes something like "the hunt has evolved" which may be true for the predators but the same cannot be said for the plot of this movie as it has been barely evolved. The Predator being the fourth instalment in the franchise and overall the sixth including the two Alien vs Predator films does hardly offer anything worth memorable or even enjoyable. Perhaps the first Predator (1987) is the only one in the whole series that was highly entertaining and bought some bloody fun at the table.

The Predator follows the story of a boy, Rory McKenna (Jacob Tremblay), who pushes or touches some buttons here and there which triggers the Predators return to the Earth. For a movie like this, there is nothing much done here for the plot as the movie relies on its characters and the beast to get the job done and they do not disappoint. All the characters were made to be funny in the film, and all the actors were excellent in their performances. We don't get to know much about the characters and their background which results in lack of connectivity with them but still during a scene near the climax, something happens, and you feel for the characters, at least a bit. The credit goes to the actors. The predator has been upgraded and looks terrifying and cool in the film. The humour lands but mostly misses the mark.

But one look at a film, and it gets clear that no one cared about the movie as they were busy making a movie about monsters doing some stuff, breaking walls and killing peoples causing explosions. They wanted to make a film to rake in money at the box office and didn't give a damn about the things happening on screen.

Here is a creature who can get invisible according to his wish, he is terrifying and kills in an R-rated fashion. The amount of tension you can generate with such a beast at your hand is plenty. Surprisingly, the film doesn't utilise him enough, and you are left with a movie where the killings look tailored and take place when required and that too without generating any tension or a suspenseful atmosphere. I was reminded of last week's The Nun as that film also had a lot of potential but settled for mediocrity.

The most surprising aspect is the director of the film Shane Black. He will give you movies like Iron Man 3 and the highly entertaining The Nice Guys and then will disappoint you by making something like The Predator.

I had a busy weekend and won't waste any more time saying anything about the film. It was dissatisfying and a bad time at the theatre. I would end by saying a line from Avengers: Infinity War which was said by Thanos to Doctor Strange in the film. He said something like "Yet You Never Once Used Your Greatest Weapon". The weapon here was the predator, and the movie underutilised its greatest strength. The franchise is getting stretched without any positive results; maybe it's time to put a stop on it which is unlikely as it roars for a sequel.
