Andhadhun Movie Review - Symphony Of The Blind

Sriram Raghavan's Andhadhun is the thriller we need which leaves you scratching your head with amazement not only because of its twists or "open to interpretations" ending but also by the way it has been made.

Cast - Ayushmann Khurrana, Tabu, Radhika Apte, Anil Dhawan, Manav Vij

Directed By - Sriram Raghavan

Genre - Black Comedy, Thriller, Mystery

A pianist, Akash (Ayushmann Khurrana), is called in to report a murder. The problem is just that he happens to be blind. But this barely covers anything in this huge twisty plot as the surprises here are plenty and shocking. One has to be careful when reviewing such movies as one small thing can turn out to be a spoiler. So, keeping things to a bare minimum, let's try to appreciate Raghavan's new thriller which forces you to think long after the credits start rolling on screen.

Everybody knows the disadvantages of being blind, so, Akash tells us the positive side to it. His blindness creates a sympathy among people, and they try to help him in every way possible. They also start trusting him more - like a woman selling the lottery ticket or people like Sophie (Radhika Apte) who even drop him off to his home. Everything seems to be going fine and then during a scene where Akash's piano echoes throughout the room, we are slowly taken to a shot of a dead body on the floor. Not much sound is made, and no dramatic music plays in the background.

One thing which had caught my attention was the use of black and white colors throughout the film. During it's opening shot itself, we are shown the black and white keys of the piano from which the scene cuts to a cat of the same color. Black is commonly related to something evil and bad while white is used to refer something good and innocent. These two colors work subtly in the background by extending the characters of this film. Together in a frame, they tell us that every person has both the good and bad side to him and this pretty much sums up almost every character in this movie.

In an interview with Film Companion, Raghavan said that he likes to give important information's to the audience and then likes to play around in the film. In Andhadhun too, he reveals everything during the first few minutes and then starts playing with your mind and the characters, so, try to keep your eyes and mind open when watching this film. If you have watched the trailer, then you might have come across the ambiguity of whether he is blind or not. Well, find it out yourself. In the hands of any other director, it would have peeled off its layers of suspense in certain parts throughout the film but Raghavan manages to hook you by revealing key elements in the beginning which is a tough job, and the result is not a movie about "whodunit", but it's more about the characters and their choices which make up for a riveting runtime of 138 minutes.

But keeping this ambiguity aside, let's try to appreciate the genius, Sriram Raghavan, who has created no less than a masterpiece with Andhadhun. His work here is both clever and brilliant. Blink an eye, and you might miss out an important detail. His use of music during some vital sequences add more fun and excitement to the scene. K. U. Mohanan's cinematography and Amit Trivedi's music make up for an entertainment having a mass appeal. The audience at my screening seemed to have enjoyed a lot during the film. This neo-noir from the director may be his best movie so far.

With a charming smile and fluent hands on the piano, Ayushmann Khurana gives the best performance of his career and that too with such ease that you cannot help but shower him with praises. The control he has on the character is masterful and never loses the grip. Tabu with her sensual style and shades of grey is the most entertaining of the lot who demands your attention whenever she is present on the screen. The omnipresent Radhika Apte as the only character without personal greed or motive seems out of place in this crime-riddled world of Raghavan. She does her part wonderfully with innocence. The shady cop played by Manav Vij and his wife make up for some excellent comic relief.

It's a film which would benefit from multiple viewings. For a movie so well-made and acted, one may ask questions like - Is Andhadhun one of the best films of the year? Yes. Should you watch it in the theatre? Absolutely. And yes, just like his previous film Badlapur, "Don't miss the beginning."
