Housewife Movie Review - A Sensual Maze
Can Evrenol's Housewife is a beautiful, gory fest that at times arouses with its beauty and then turns you off with hardcore torture porn.
Cast - Clementine Poidatz, Ali Aksoz, David Sakurai, Defne Halman, Alicia Kapudag
Directed By - Can Evrenol
Genre - Horror
Dreams are inexplicable and fascinating. They start at some random point and stop abruptly. The same can be said for Can Evrenol's Housewife where the transition occurs suddenly without any warning which gives somewhat mixed feelings from within. One reason for this weirdness can be associated with the movies in general where the transition mostly occurs smoothly from one scene to the other, and then you see this film, so feeling a bit weird is okay. But of course, this movie itself is unusual.
Holly (Clementine Poidatz) suffers a childhood trauma which haunts her through her life, so much that she pee's on the sink and even gets scared when masturbating. She lives with her husband Timucin (Ali Aksoz) who I believe is a writer and we see him trying to figure out a poster for his new book. We are introduced to there only two friends who are also married couples like them and during a dinner date with them on their third anniversary; a conversation slips in regarding a cult named ULM (Umbrella of Love and Mind) who are about to host a function in town. From here, things get dreamy like a never-ending nightmare which gets rather hard to witness sometimes.
The film starts roaring with a disturbing sequence and then remains silent for a few minutes. It's the silence before a big storm. The director helps us to settle down and prepares us for one "hell" of a ride, but nothing can make you ready for the things that start coming your way. I will be lying if I said that this film is unique as there are many movies which have tried to explore their narratives using this style and if like me you too watch a lot of films, then you may have come across quite a few movies yourself. But the thing is, these kinds of movies are rare to find nowadays and so, I was happy to see something like this after a long time.
Much like it's opening title credit, this film starts to make sense slowly as the things start to fall in place. It reminded me of other horror films like The Shining, Rosemary's Baby, Insidious, Voice from the Stone and Hereditary but it does not try to copy them in any way. At best, it takes important cues from them and makes its own scary world full of creepiness and torture.
I had never seen any of the cast before in any films, so they were new faces to me. Clementine Poidatz gave a daring performance and she did something's which I know can get hard for actors to do on screen, but still, she did it all professionally. I got huge respect for her after watching this film. David Sakurai's character was very creepy, and he did a fantastic job of playing that character perfectly. Ali Aksoz as the husband gave a controlled performance and Alicia Kapudag as Holly's friend Valery was serviceable in her part.
Can Evrenol's direction is outstanding. I have not seen his 2015 film Baskin, but now I would surely check it out. This man knows how to direct a horror film and does a fantastic job here. A big shout out to Tayman Tekin's gorgeous cinematography which gives an aesthetic look to this film even when things get ugly. Be it the crazy visuals, weird angles or splattering blood, everything looks more lively and vivid, thanks to him. Talking of technicalities, you have to consider that spectacularly eerie music by Antoni Maiovvi which makes sure you don't go off the hook and helps in keeping things tense and gory.
It gets hard to watch during the climax, and its graphic violence may force some to puke. During a scene, I had to almost cover my eyes and look through my fingers. But still, if you are the one who likes to see something different than the conventional slasher or horror films, I recommend you to check it out. Not to compare but Housewife for me is the Inception of horror films. Its good to see filmmakers trying to find terror and horror in things from which we get positive vibes or things which make us feel safe like family.
