Baazaar Movie Review - Game Of Numbers

A small town ambitious young man becomes a stock trader after moving to Mumbai. But his dream of becoming successful fueled by the lust for money may prove harmful to him.

Cast - Saif Ali Khan, Radhika Apte, Chitrangada Singh, Rohan Mehra

Directed By - Gauravv K. Chawla

Genre - Crime, Drama

Director Gauravv K. Chawla's Baazaar is that film which is made with noble intentions, but its attempts seem desperate after a time, and the film loses all the connection with the audience midway during the interval.

The story is about Rizwan Ahmed (Rohan Mehra) who hails from a small city of Allahabad. Naturally, he is not interested in the little things around him and wants to make it big. He wants to go to Mumbai he says. In the next few scenes, a family drama takes place after which her sister takes out her phone and books a flight for him through Paytm. Rizwan packs his bags and heads towards his dream and lands in Mumbai. Oh I almost forgot, he idolises a notorious big businessman named Shakun Kothari (Saif Ali Khan), and he is also the reason why Ahmed chooses Mumbai.

The story is not something new, and many films in the past have done many renditions of it. A man treating someone as his god and drawing inspiration from him to reach his level someday has been shown to us before. What Chawla does is that he places the story against the backdrop of the stock market and uses power and money to weave a tale of lies, deceit and double-crossings. To its credit, it does have a few scenes that were well-crafted and amusing to watch. The problem, however, is that those scenes are less in quantity.

The main problem with Baazaar is that it tries to become everything at once. There is a piece involving Ahmed and his family, then comes the love story between the main characters and all this is mixed with the main plot involving Ahmed and Kothari. There is so much going on here, and the film struggles to strike a balance between everything. The result is messy, and overall, the movie fails to engage us with any of the aspects of the storyline presented in it.

Its exhaustive first half tired me and my worst fears were realised when Ahmed after the interval says that his story has just begun. Hence, its long, stretchy and never-ending runtime of 137 minutes beats you down, and after a while, you just wish for it to end. The songs make it worse. So all it had left was that one last twist in the tale which unfortunately again didn't come out as its strength. It is not at all shocking and is easily predictable from a mile. In fact, the whole movie was predictable from the beginning to the end, but that can be cured if the film at least invests you in it which sadly Baazaar does not.

Chitrangada and Radhika don't have much to do here although Apte does have more screen time than Singh. The role they played was less challenging and didn't tap their full potential. They both are excellent actresses and could have done there parts by sleepwalking. Debutant Rohan Mehra gave an earnest performance but still has a long way to go in terms of acting. He was good but can get better with more practice. So its left to Saif to do all the heavy lifting here and he never disappoints. Playing a shady, ruthless character in the film, Khan gives a compelling performance and is the sole reason who keeps you at your seats for the whole movie.

In the end, Baazaar turned out to be a disappointment which takes a lot of time to get to the point. A big no to its rhetorical question - "Kem Cho Mazama"? Nothing feels fine after walking out of the theatre. And what's the deal with all the qwerty keypad Blackberry phones? Product placement I guess.
