Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Review - Satanically Beautiful
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is moody, bloody and a whole lot of fun. Its leading protagonist is a treat to watch who easily connects with the viewers and keeps them interested.
Cast - Kiernan Shipka, Ross Lynch, Lucy Davis, Miranda Otto, Chance Perdomo, Michelle Gomez, Jaz Sinclair, Lachlan Watson, Tati Gabrielle, Richard Coyle
Developed By - Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa
Genre - Supernatural, Horror
On her 16th birthday, Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) has to decide between the human life and the life of a witch. She must choose whether to walk on the "Path of Night" or the "Path of Light". If she decides to become a witch, then she would retain her powers but has to lose her friends, and if she chooses her friends, then she would lose her powers. Sabrina wants both of them, but as we eventually get to know, that might not be possible after all. Of course, the show becomes much more than this simple basic premise by the time it ends.
Based on the comic book of the same name, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina had been one of my anticipated shows of this month which premiered on Netflix this Friday on 26th November. Roberto's adaptation of the comic is stunning and filled with beautiful locations and gorgeous visuals. He builds a world full of witches and occult's which expand as the season progresses episode by episode. Borrowing from other fantasy shows and films like Harry Potter, Stranger Things and even Insidious, it creates its own mythical world full of surprises and horror. This series is said to be inspired from movies like The Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby and some other satanic horror films from the 1960's and 1970's which becomes evident while watching it.
Kiernan Shipka as the young witch Sabrina was just fantastic to watch. Her portrayal of a teenager who loves her friends and does anything for them was wonderful, and she did it without a flicker. Perhaps the greatest strength of this show lies in its exceptionally talented ensemble cast who give a mind-blowing performance. Be it Sabrina's friends, her cute and caring aunts, her pansexual witch cousin, her boyfriend, the Weird Sisters, the high priest of the unholy church, everyone was terrific in their parts.
The lives of witches are not so different from that of a normal human being. They serve the dark lord, attend an unholy church, celebrate Feast of Feasts which is their version of Thanksgiving and try to maintain their integrity among the witches society. Hence, it also tells that not all witches are evil and there co-exists both the good and bad witches among them like our normal society consisting of human beings.
But the shows main motive is not to tell about the witches and their dark spells. It just uses it to deliver a grim message about the dominant male society who impose their supreme power over the women, although they use them for there personal gains, but still they don't consider them as there equals. It also uses the character of Zelda Spellman, one of Sabrina's two witch aunts, to tell the constant need of maintaining one's image in the society and how it on some level breaks you from the inside.
The show takes advantage of a 16-year-old teenager with magical powers to create situations that someone in her shoes would surely do. She decides to do something's during the last few episodes that only a person of her status and age would do, and the show smartly uses the circumstances to build some situations that I didn't like or agreed to, just like the people around her. But again, as mentioned before, anyone in her shoes would have done the same thing. Its the show's creativity with it that counts.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has a dark story going for it and never does it get burdened by the weighty themes masked under it. My one complaint would surely be regarding its focus on the storyline which keeps shifting from time to time resulting in disconnection for some time. It is during these times that the show feels long and unnecessary stretched out beyond the point. The way it ends surely does open a whole new window of excitement and thrill for the second season which could end up making this series another Harry Potter or Twilight. Let's hope it casts its spell in the right direction.
