Badhaai Ho Movie Review - Sweet, Simple and Effective
Badhaai Ho is a welcome release this weekend that is heartwarming and a lot of fun. The social drama takes a lighter approach to deliver a heavy message to the society.

A middle-class woman gets pregnant at an age when she is "expected" to take care of the household. The woman here is Priyamvada (Neena Gupta) who after a sensual encounter with her husband Jeetender (Gajraj Rao) enters pregnancy. Being from a middle-class background, the neighbours start talking and teasing both of them. A neighbour taunts Jeetender as he tries to avoid everyone hurrying away for his work. Forget the outsiders, even the situation at home is far from good. There children Nakul (Ayushmann Khurrana) and Gullar (Shardul Rana) too are embarrassed by this situation, so much that during intercourse, Nakul even asks his girlfriend Renee (Sanya Malhotra) that if sex is something their parents should be doing.
The film fully utilises its setting in Delhi as it brings to surface the language and the people of the city. Sanu Varghese's cinematography truly brings out the real essence of Delhi, be it the high rising offices or a medium sized locality, so much that you feel like you are transported to that place among the characters. Director Amit Ravindernath Sharma can be forgiven for making Tevar after watching this film.
Badhaai Ho tries to give a message to the society about the evergreen nature of love and how the passion finds its way even after several years of marriage, provided you have what they call true love. A middle-aged woman getting pregnant with a baby and the commotion caused by it is something you already knew you would see in the film. But for me, this film was more about the family and how the parents give there best for there child. The love that a mother has for her child is something beyond the words. Her concerning questions about you having food or caring about giving medicines on time, all the while even after fighting with her is what actually true love is. Not only mother but this mutual feeling also binds the father to the son, an older brother to his younger one and all the other members living under a single roof.
Ayushmann Khurana who just recently gave a bang on performance in Andhadhun strikes again with another enjoyable film and performance. He is going to be the star of this year. Sanya Malhotra who starred in Dangal and was recently seen in Pataakha has comparatively less to do in this film when compared to her previous ones, but she manages to effectively perform here. Gajraj Rao who plays an extension of his role as a father from the TVF's series Fathers was mind-blowing here. An actor in all the right terms, he was simply breathtaking to watch as he changed his expressions from a concerning father to a caring husband. In the end, it's Neena Gupta to whom this film truly belongs. Her portrayal of a mother was on-point and relatable. She adopts all the mannerisms and the kindheartedness that her character requires. A huge shout out to Surekha Sikri playing as Dadi who gives some memorable and laugh-out-loud moments in the film.
The movie wants us to leave the nagging neighbours behind and fly like a bird in the sky. It also tells aloud and confidently that dialogue of Daisy Shah from Race 3 to the society - "Our business is our business, none of your business".
Like many movies, Badhaai Ho loses steam in the second half where it starts to meander a little bit. Some unnecessary scenes are introduced to provide comic relief while some are put to perhaps extend the runtime of the film. This is indeed a relief from the headache caused by watching the disastrous Namaste England. Overall, I came out with a big satisfying smile on my face.
