The Girl in the Spider's Web Movie Review - Spanning Familiar Tropes
A hacker is hired to retrieve Firefall, a program that can give access to the world's nuclear codes. In the process, she encounters her disturbed past and battles against it to complete the intended task.
Cast - Claire Foy, Sverrir Gudnason, Lakeith Stanfield, Sylvia Hoeks, Stephen Merchant, Christopher Convery, Mikael Persbrandt
Directed By - Fede Alvarez
Genre - Crime, Thriller, Drama
The film opens with two girls playing chess who are interrupted when their father (Mikael Persbrandt) summons them to his room. By his evil smile and gesture, we come to know that he is not having a healthy relationship with his daughters and might be sexually involved with them. Our suspicions are cleared when he calls one of them to "play a game" with him. One of them decides not to take the crap anymore and takes her sisters arm to run away from him. They come to a dead end from where they need to jump in order to escape. One of the sisters decides to stay while the other takes the leap and runs away.
The one who jumps grows up to be Lisbeth Salander (Claire Foy), a deadly hacker who can make her way through your mobile devices and security systems with a click of a button. She uses her skills to save women's facing harassment from there male counterparts as is established from an early sequence involving a bruised woman and her drunken husband. A vigilante if you may. Her life takes a turn in another direction when Frans Balder (Stephen Merchant), a former NSA employee, requests her to destroy Firefall, a program developed by him to access the world's nuclear codes. He believes that in wrong hands it could do severe damage to the world because come on, it is nuclear codes and we know how dangerous they are. The rest of the movie is like any other you have seen many times in your life.
The Girl in the Spider's Web is the sequel and a reboot to Fincher's excellent psychological crime thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and is based on the novel of the same name. Claire replaces Rooney Mara for the role of Lisbeth and Gudnason replaces Daniel Craig for Blomkvist from the previous instalment. I wish they had continued the series with the same actors and director but alas, things never run according to one's hope and wishes.
In the beginning, Salander lives at a safe house which is situated near a frozen pond which if you have seen the trailers know that it will be used as an escape route by Lisbeth during a chase sequence. She crosses the pond without breaking the ice while the police cars stand on the other side of the dock staring defeatedly at her. This entire scene sums up the whole movie as things like these occur repetitively throughout its entire runtime. Lisbeth double-crosses enemies and authorities everytime they try to catch or even get close to her. The whole film looks like a setup placed one after the other where a situation is created, and Salander is put there to show off her cool hacking abilities while the people in pursuit of her try to catch her desperately. Even when attacked, she comes out with a scratch and drives crazily on the road to chase after the villains.
Movies like these have protagonists who are very intelligent and smarter than others. Even bullets fear them and decide to hit the walls instead of the body or maybe the shooters are not trained enough to aim at the target. These things are enjoyable at first but become uninteresting after some time especially when they start to repeat themselves. This film does the same job which makes it dull after some time. There is no suspense left when your hero is more like a superhero who escapes every deadly situation he encounters. The thrill is drained away leaving no space for connectivity with the protagonist or any character for that matter.
Claire Foy gives her best and makes the most out of her part. She tries to keep you engaged and focused with all her piercings, tattoos and fuck-all attitude but fails due to lack of depth given to her character. We are forced to follow someone whom we don't care for and barely know which fails to establish a connection with her. The other characters felt like toys made to move along with Lisbeth. Some were with her while the others not. And also how many times have we seen the threat on the world because of nuclear codes being feared to go into the wrong hands. Frankly, I am exhausted with all the nuclear thing being used as plot devices. This movie doesn't add anything new to the same old story we have been now seeing for a long time.
Director Fede Alvarez who previously rebooted Evil Dead in 2013 and made Don't Breathe in 2016 fails to charm this time. It lacks the coldness and brutality of the winter, a season which the film wears on it. While my nerdy side enjoyed seeing all the gadgets and computer screens hacking different devices, the cinephile in me was exhausted. For people seeking simple pleasure in explosions, car sequences and a godly character, The Girl in the Spider's Web may give a good time to them, but I suspect even they would run out of power after some time. The film starts with a lot of promise but in the end, leaves us cold and naked.
