Director Steve McQueen's film about three women's attempting heist after there husbands demise has more than one thing going under its surface. One may compare it with Ocean's 8 which too had a group of women's pulling off a heist, but Widows is different. It's interested in shedding light on societal issues in parallel with all the robbery plans lead by Veronica Rawlings (Viola Davis) who is the mastermind responsible for forming this team.
Opening with a masterful sequence involving an intimate scene between Harry Rawlings (Liam Neeson) and Veronica, it cuts back between two shots involving Harry and his team - one gives a peek inside their personal lives while the other shows them escaping in a vehicle with loads of cash. This unusual way in which it introduces the characters confirms that the rest of the movie will also be masterfully edited and that is what happens thanks to Joe Walker. Another scene which stood out involved the camera being placed at the front of a car which then showed two sides of the neighbourhood. The person in the car is Jack Mulligan (Colin Farrell), and this scene proved its importance because of this character as Mulligan wants to transform one side with the another. Such moments greet us throughout the film which shows the seriousness in filmmaking is as important here as the subject at hand.
There is a moment when Veronica says something like - "We have to do it because they don't think we have the balls". It clearly tells us about the current issue of gender inequality where women are treated less than men. It also critiques corrupt local politics, comments on topics such as racism, police brutality and so much more. This can be somewhat expected from the director who earlier made 12 Years a Slave. With Widows, he tries to push the boundaries and spreads his legs by acknowledging current social norms all the while maintaining the topic involving the heist. Though he doesn't lose focus and many have certified it as a popcorn entertainer mixed with a message, I suspect that not many would agree it to be a mass entertaining popcorn ride. People will expect a full-on thrilling heist film with twists and turns in the way and some action thrown in between to fill the gap. It has all these but in a limited quantity and so I believe many would be disappointed with it. Many have complained that it touches upon some serious topics but doesn't resolve them. Well, it tries to show the bad times filled with corruption and betrayal in which the people are living, like a mirror you can say.
The casting here is not only brilliant but also clever. One of the actors is used effectively to provide a shock to the audience. Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez and Elizabeth Debicki completed each other with there electrifying chemistry. Daniel Kaluuya has come a long way from his Get Out days and never fails to impress with his performance. Colin Farrell seems to have fun among the lot. With his smart haircut and clean-shaven face manages to hide the devil within. The screen lightened up with energy whenever Cynthia Erivo came in front of the camera. Viola Davis carries a cute white dog with her which also starred in Game Night. I have come to know that her name is Olivia and she can be found under "Medium Dog" on the Animal Casting Atlanta Website. She is just adorable.
Widows is worth your time and money and will make huge waves during the Oscar nominations. Combining McQueen's direction with the editing of Joe Walker which is further heightened to a higher level with Hans Zimmer's subtle and powerful background score, this one should not be missed.
