Aquaman Movie Review - As Above So Below
Arthur Curry a.k.a Aquaman finds himself in a war between the humans and Atlanteans. Now it's up to him to search for the trident which could prevent this war.
Cast - Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Patrick Wilson, Willem Dafoe
Directed By - James Wan
Genre - Fantasy, Sci-Fi
DCEU movies have faced harsh criticisms in the past. All of them got you excited by the trailers and then slapped on your face in the theatres. So, when the trailer of Aquaman dropped on the internet, I decided to keep my expectations in check even though I admire this film's director James Wan who had earlier made some impressive horror films like Insidious and Conjuring and also Furious 7.
Aquaman is the sixth instalment in the DC Extended Universe and maybe there best one so far. Being an origin story, the film is about how Arthur Curry/Aquaman (Jason Momoa) tries to prevent a war between the humans and the Atlanteans and in the process becomes the King of Atlantis.
Now Aquaman is not a breath of fresh air or adds anything new to the superhero genre. It follows the same old tropes and cliches that almost all the movies have taken in the past. But trust James Wan on the director's chair, and he would make that old recipe feel fresh again. Instead of trying anything new, Wan uses that same old tropes to his advantage and fuses it with some energy, high-end impressive underwater CGI and some fun. The result is something that would entertain you for the whole 143 minutes. This proves that even a mediocre script could transform into something enjoyable if the director knows how to handle the material at hand.
The world underwater is gorgeous to look at. I watched it in awe as it all popped out in 3D. The ideas are impressive, and much thought has been given in creating a world under the deep blue sea where the people ride on the sharks. Atlanta looks attractive drenched in blue while the colourful fishes on the screen further increase its beauty. Some scenes like the one where Aquaman and Mera (Amber Heard) go under the water with flares make up for a breathtaking view.
Another surprise comes in the form of the action sequences which are another thing of beauty here. Wan has excellently filmed the action parts, and they are nothing like the ones in Furious 7 with all the shaky cams which made it impossible to comprehend what was going on the screen. Here he masterfully uses the set pieces to create some spectacular fighting scenes that keep you invested. A scene in which the characters run on the rooftops in Italy is one of the major highlights, and I wish they had not shown it in the trailers. Almost everytime there is an explosion before an action scene.
Jason Momoa as Aquaman makes a meal out of his part and is the one who fully seems to enjoy himself here. Amber Heard as the love interest Mera performs some stunning mumbo-jumbo with water and even wines. Patrick Wilson, Nicole Kidman and Willem Dafoe were all perfect in their parts. Thankfully the bad guys have a reason for being the villains instead of being plain cardboard characters.
Aquaman can get cheesy at times like those teenage rom-coms involving holding of the hands, looking in the eyes and kissing passionately during a critical sequence. Call it lazy writing or self-awareness, but the film manages to give a good time to you. I went in with minimum expectations and came out with an almost satisfying smile on my face. Just go in wanting to be entertained, and you will be satisfied. Maybe what DC needed was a capable director like Wan the whole time.
Rating - 3/5
