Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle is the new Netflix film based on the works of Rudyard Kipling and is the darker adaptation helmed by the director Andy Serkis. You know the premise that it is about a boy named Mowgli (Rohan Chand) who is adopted by the wolves and is raised in the jungle among the animals. The villain is a tiger, Shere Khan (Benedict Cumberbatch), who very much wants to taste his meat and goes to greater lengths to fulfil his desire. We all know how it all turns out and ends.

So, why a new film? That's the question I had been asking myself since the first time I saw it's trailer online. Frankly, after all the adaptations in the past, I believe it to be an unnecessary film, but here we are. But you have to admire the passion of its director Andy Serkis, who wanted to tell this story in a darker tone and he did what he wanted to do. I respect that.

Mowgli is a character who struggles between living in the jungle and the human world. He struggles with his identity and never fully belongs to anywhere. He is a man-cub; looks like a man and behaves like a cub. Uses both his legs and arms for running and sniffs the food before eating it. Serkis shows his inner turmoil with the help of Chand's remarkable performance. With his long, rough hairs and lonely eyes, he shows his feelings of anger and confusion when trapped in a cage among the humans. The hair becomes oiled, and the same eyes show confidence and courage in another scene. Chand manages to do all this convincingly. The visuals are top-notch and make the narrative go easy on the eyes. The chase and action sequences pump up the blood while you watch holding your breath.

There is a character, Bhoot (Louis Ashbourne Serkis) who is Mowgli's best friend and has trouble living among his kind as the other wolves call him "freak" and behave rudely with him. If a man-cub is having a rough time adapting to the ways of the other animals then Bhoot, a wolf cub is struggling to make a place among his kinds. This feeling of belonging to nowhere makes Bhoot and Mowgli best friends. I do wish they had more screen time together. Their conversations had some painful feelings and optimism in them, one which kicks you in your gut and breaks your heart during a reveal.

Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle may not be your most awaited film of this year, but it also won't hurt to watch it. Serkis's ambitious and dark retelling of the story, although inconsistent at times, may make up for a nice, good time this weekend. Also, would anybody explain to me how that fire kept on burning in spite of the heavy rains?
