You end up making something like KGF when you binge-watch that early 90s cinema (the bad ones) where the hero remains invincible and songs are sung in his praises. You get consumed and decide to rope in a famous star to make your version out of it. This is what writer-director Prashanth Neel ended up doing in this two-part series that accounts the 17000-year-old history of war against the oppressors and the oppressed in the Kolar Gold Fields.
Raja Krishnappa Bairya or Rocky (Yash) is a man with tough skin and a heart of gold. His name strikes fear across many people, and goons attack him one by one so that he gets to show off his punches and kicks. In one scene, he punches a man and uses his hand to brush his hair. Teamwork is something our Indian thugs seriously need to learn and apply during the fights. Here is a character who takes risks and accepts challenges that no one else dares to take. His will for power is driven by his mother who before passing away made him promise that he would become powerful and wealthy. After that, "power" and "money" are heard throughout the film. There are shabby introductions of various dons and their backstories. The set-up is hurried and done with montages.
Talking of introductions and set-ups, there is an undercooked love story between Rocky and Reena Desai (Srinidhi Shetty). She is a daughter of a big gangster who jams the traffic to have booze and parties. Almost instantaneously as is the tradition, Rocky falls for her. "Congratulations", he says because she is lucky enough that he fell in love with her. That's the kind of confidence our hero exhibits. The rest of the development takes place as usual - she hates him and says no but eventually falls for him because he does something good in front of her, and immediately he becomes her world.
But what makes it all even worse is the way the film is narrated. Basically, Anand Ingalagi (Anant Nag) is a senior journalist and the author of El-Dorado, a banned novel which contains the events of KGF. He is called in for an interview where he narrates the story to Deepa Hegde (Malavika Avinash). So far so good. What happens after sometimes is that he starts jumping forward and gives us a sneak peek into the future of the story. Every suspense that this movie even remotely manages to develop is all drained out. Anyway, you know that no one can beat the hero and on top of that, you show some scenes from the future. How do you then expect the audience to even care or to be on the hook?
One may argue about its top-notch cinematography and beautiful visuals. Granted there were some breathtaking shots, but all of them lost their potential with its painful and jarring editing style. Nothing manages to stay for even a few seconds on screen as we are thrown scenes after scenes, shots after shots, on our faces repeatedly. This has to be one of the worst editings a film has gone through. This is the final product you get when your editors are on weed while working.
Yash is definitely the only one who doesn't let you down in any way. He does everything with conviction and owns every second here. He sells his anger, the fights, and the Hindi dubbed cringy dialogues with confidence. What remains more consistent is the cigarette that he carries everywhere which makes one wonder that why the hell doesn't he also take a lighter with him. Maybe his lighter could have been stolen and then used by the editors to get high while editing. Although, it gets a little bit interesting when the focus shifts towards the KGF but the things take their time to progress, and by that time, it had already scrambled your brains.
