Simmba - Movie Review
A girl gets raped, and a cop swears to avenge her and bring the family to justice. The beats are predictable and offer nothing new to the experience.
Cast - Ranveer Singh, Sara Ali Khan, Sonu Sood, Ashutosh Rana, Vaidehi Parshurami
Directed By - Rohit Shetty
Genre - Action, Drama
Sangram Bhalerao a.k.a Simmba (Ranveer Singh) is an antihero who becomes a cop because he wanted to mint loads of cash. He takes money from the rich and puts it inside his pockets. He is over-the-top and packed with heavy doses of energy. We are introduced to him during a chase sequence which takes place in a "dhobi ghat" where the waters from the clothes shower on him like a blessing announcing his grand presence. The film remains goofy and fun until it decides to take itself seriously.
Simmba is an orphan who makes Aakruti (Vaidehi Parshurami) his little sister. He tells her to call him anytime if the need arises. What happens is that she gets raped by a local goon and then dies. Simmba is then consumed by rage wanting revenge for the wrong done on his sister.
Now, this is where the problem arises. Simmba is directed by Rohit Shetty whose filmography contains movies where cars defy the law of gravity and the punches land the villain's miles away from there original position. The plot remains absurd with light-hearted moments. With Simmba, he tries to be serious and attempts to dish out a social message to his audience. One can understand and to some extent appreciate his intentions, but perhaps he may not be the best director to helm a serious plot. He struggles in balancing the sudden change of tone which starts a little before the interval and takes up the whole second half. It sings the manipulative patriotic beats of Satyameva Jayate. The audience is evoked by statements like "if your sister had been there", "rapists should be killed" etc. for millions of times. It all feels forced and repetitive to the point that you stop caring. The silly things and the cameos in between remain the only redeeming factor of the film.
On the other hand, it's wonderful to see how it manages to mock and at the same time admire the cliches of the Hindi cinema. Ranveer and Shetty's collaboration is fantastic. It's like a tailor-made project made by keeping Singh in mind. So, its only natural that Simmba feels like it rhymes along with Ranveer and adjusts itself according to him. He fits the bill more than Ajay Devgn. If Singham, Golmaal and Jolly LLB would have a threesome, then the result would be Simmba.
Maybe if it had stayed on its initial track, Simmba would have been at least a good popcorn watch. But its ambition to pack in a social punch that too by someone who struggles to maintain the tone leads to its demise. When Shetty tries to make something with a serious tone he fails miserably like the case with his previous horror-comedy Golmaal Again. Perhaps he should stick with his mindless "masala" moviemaking at which he at least manages to cheer you up in parts if not entirely.
