Blindspotting Movie Review - Welcome to Oakland
With only three days left in his probation, a man must keep himself out of any troubles as he wants to start fresh in Oakland.
Cast - Daveed Diggs, Rafael Casal, Janina Gavankar, Jasmine Cephas Jones
Directed By - Carlos López Estrada
Genre - Comedy, Drama
You know that you are in for an amazing experience when the opening credits also remain faithful to the title of the film. According to a character, "Blindspotting" is when you look at something, and there can be another thing that you don't see like that picture shown to us of a vase at which if you look closely again, you would see two faces. The view depends from person to person. Like the way, this movie starts with a split screen allowing every individual to pick his side whether he first sees the high-rising buildings or the small rural houses, a group dance or a solo and so on. Perhaps, it tries to remove the blind spot from Oakland by showing the two sides of it at once. Even Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal, the writers, actors and the producers of this film, have told that they wanted to remove the misinterpretation of Oakland found in many movies.
Blindspotting takes us with Collin (Daveed Diggs) who has to spend the last three days of his probation without any trouble. He tries to remain calm and keeps his distance from guns. He works for a moving company along with his best friend Miles (Rafael Casal) who is short tempered and high on testosterone. It is interesting to see that their customers are always the one who move outside the city. They have each others back until a crack on the wall occurs when Collin witnesses an encounter of a black civilian. It starts haunting him and pulls him back with some questionable choices and decisions.
Let's take a moment to appreciate the craft on display here. The scenes are framed perfectly and shot masterfully. Collin's fear is shown by using the dolly zoom as the city closes in on him while he runs in the morning or during the shootout, where the victim is framed in the side mirror while the police stand at the window of the vehicle. There are other plenty of breathtaking moments present throughout Blindspotting.
Collin raps about the present situation going on around him which takes the film out of realism while still being grounded. During a rap, the words are fastly paced, and it doesn't require any background music to enjoy fully. And so while rapping, it becomes surreal while still being real. The final rap which takes place at a house is perhaps the most powerful scene you will see this year.
Though it is a comedy, the tone of Blindspotting takes a shift now and then. It is like that person who cracks a joke during a serious situation refusing to let himself be surrendered by it. Now, this may come out as a problem for some people who will see it as a fault. I think director López Estrada has done a marvellous job as he shows something very dark and disturbing without getting too indulgent with it.
Daveed and Rafael are best friends not only in reel but also in real life. Their chemistry is outstanding. The females in their life Janina Gavankar and Jasmine Cephas Jones were equally stunning.
Saying anything more may spoil the film as not many would have seen it in spite of its theatrical release way back in July. I am one of those people who arrived late at the party, and I am sure there would be many more. Let me conclude by saying that this is the buddy comedy for the ages.
