The Favourite Movie Review - The Insanity of Love

The romantic and sultry relationship between the two women undergoes complications when a third character interferes in there life.

Cast - Emma Stone, Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz, Nicholas Hoult, Joe Alwyn

Directed By - Yorgos Lanthimos

Genre - Drama, Comedy

The year is 1708 and Britain is at war with the French. This does not stop the people from enjoying a duck race or throwing oranges at a naked man. The daily entertainment goes on while in the background, soldiers die in the war. On any other day, this could have easily been a movie about the consequences of war and all the fights and victory. But this is not that film.

When we first see Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) and Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz), we instantly sense romance in the air. Our speculations are cleared as the story progresses. Queen Anne suffers from gout and is taken around in a wheelchair generally by her lover Sarah. The Queen is as much interested in ruling as I am interested in Mathematics. We both tend to yawn even at the mention of there names. The only thing she enjoys is sharing her bed with Sarah and playing with her rabbits which represent the children she had lost over time. It is then Sarah who looks over the royal business and takes decisions on behalf of the Queen. The daily routine of lust is disrupted when Sarah's younger cousin Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives at the palace.

While you may love and sometimes feel sad for Anne, the audiences relationship changes from moment to moment when it comes to Sarah and Abigail. You start by rooting for one and hating the other and then after some time, your feelings would interchange for the two characters.

Since the protagonists here are women, all the heavy liftings are done by them, and they do a fantastic job too. It is said that a woman can control a man on the tip of her fingers. In The Favourite, not only the men but also one woman controls another with her charm and sexuality. They go on to create a big drama if required to mend the things according to there needs while the men's get manipulated and pass by the screen.

The costumes are beautiful to look at while the sets are grand and add depth to the film. The production design is outstanding. Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara's writing is excellent and deserves praises. Yorgos Lanthimos's decision of using low-angle shots make the characters seem important while the wide angle shots sometimes used with a fisheye lens make up for a grand and pleasing view. My favourite moments here are during the close-ups which reveal a new identity in a character. Its incredible background score keeps you on the edge managing to glue your eyeballs on the screen.

The Favourite is a fascinating film that at times may seem a bit self-indulgent in it. But that is not a complaint and is easily a tiny thing that can be overlooked. All the three actresses were terrific giving one of there best performances to date. Movies like these which have some incredible camera setups and techniques are rarely made nowadays. Some shots will stay with me for a very long time. You know a film is worth it when you come out with a memory and an unforgettable experience. The Favourite has the potential to be that movie for you.
