Village Rockstars Movie Review - The Hidden Place
A girl dreams of owning a guitar which she would play in a band she wishes to form along with the other boys.
Cast - Bhanita Das, Basanti Das, Manabendra Das
Directed By - Rima Das
Genre - Coming-of-Age, Drama
Dhunu (Bhanita Das) is a ten-year-old girl who aspires to be a guitarist. She wants to form a band along with a group of boys with whom she hangs out with. The village is small, and the families of the children are not financially strong, but that doesn't stop them from dreaming. They play instruments made out of cardboards and thermocols. The instruments may be fake, but their dreams are real.
Village Rockstars is directed, written, produced (along with Jaya Das) and edited by Rima Das. The cinematography is also done by her. It's no wonder that this film is known as "one woman show". While the majority of the big budget movies generally come out as a disappointment, Village Rockstars surprises you with its tenderness and a heartwarming story that unfolds in a small village in Assam. At the surface, it's about a girl and her dream of owning a guitar, but its roots go as deep as the trees on which Dhunu spends her time playing and climbing. Some societal issues like gender inequality are tackled without much melodrama. My favourite aspect involves a mature and forward relationship between the daughter and the mother. Their scenes together were some of the best and soul-stirring for me.
What's fascinating is that Das doesn't want you to pity for the characters deprived state. The film doesn't beg you to shed tears. The movie opens with a line in which Das dedicates the film to her village and the people living in it. She makes you feel like a passive viewer living among the characters looking over the daily routines of there lives as they lay down to catch a breath in the fields escaping into there dreams. There beautiful, calm and worry-free faces put a smile on the lips. The low-angle shots make them the rockstars of there world.
The actors here are not professionally trained or have been to any acting schools, and yet, they perform better than some actors currently working in the industry. They become oblivious of the fact that a camera is rolling in front of them which allows them to come out naturally. They all deserve applause.
We now have movies like Tumbbad and Village Rockstars which prove that hard work, patience and dedication towards your work will help you to climb the ladder of success. They also show us that you don't need expensive CGI's to render a gorgeously looking scene. I watched Rima's interviews where she told that she never lost hope and was very keen and focussed on making the film. She initially wanted to be an actress but failed to become one. Maybe it was all for the best as we now have one of the most dedicated and finest filmmakers of our country. People like Rima Das inspire others with there personality and work. They give hope to others and motivate them to pursue their dreams. People like these greatly influence me to pursue my dream of becoming a successful film critic. I do hope that I get success in the future. Until then, I have people like Das and characters like Dhunu to look up to who prevent me from deviation or put me back to my path. All I can do is not to give up hope.
