Suspiria (2018) Movie Review - A Dance of Blood
A woman enters a suspicious dance academy where the other members are accused of witchcraft. A student mysteriously disappears, and the recently arrived woman takes her place in the upcoming dance.
Cast - Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, Mia Goth, Chloë Grace Moretz
Directed By - Luca Guadagnino
Genre - Supernatural Horror, Fantasy
Suspiria is based on the 1977 film of the same name which was directed by Dario Argento. I decided to watch this new remake without visiting the original and frankly, you don't need to see the old one to enjoy this gory ride.
Susie Bannion (an excellent Dakota Johnson) enters a dance academy which goes by the name Tanz. Soon she forms a bond with the choreographer, Madame Blanc (a fantastic Tilda Swinton), who pushes her to extreme limits. In between all this comes the sudden disappearance of one of the students named Patricia (the always dependable Chloë Grace Moretz) who we first see in the beginning revealing secrets about the academy to her psychotherapist, Josef Klemperer. She tells him that Tanz is run by a coven of witches after which she vanishes from the stage. There is a talk about the three mothers namely Mater Tenebrarum, Mater Lachrymarum and Mother Suspiriorum. All these details scratch the surface of something sinister that goes on under the ground, ready to pounce on you from the corner.
Guadagnino's films are raw and bleak. Those familiar with his previous work Call Me by Your Name may know what to expect from Suspiria technically. He infuses some kind of realism in his movies that automatically make you a part of it. Instead of treating you as a passive viewer, he transports you to his world providing what we know as a "cinematic experience".
The setting takes place in Germany with the then political scenario being played in the background which runs parallel with the main story. The hostages in a plane are referred to the women in the academy who are now unable to leave. There is no escape without death. A bomb blast hints at the big explosion towards the end where the fire is replaced by cold red blood.
Guadagnino cleverly uses the mirror shots to convey the idea that what you see is not what you get. The reflections are a false representation of the personalities. They only show what is outside while hiding the inner secrets of one's identity. The sudden close-up shots towards the characters wide-eyed faces establish their powers to look through the mirrors or walls and inside others body. During a scene, this close-up shot is slowly used to complete a connection between two people. The dance sequences are well choreographed and pump up the energy.
Susie's relationship with her mother is not at best terms. She hates her for some reasons best left undisclosed to avoid spoilers and prays for her to die a gruesome death. So it feels natural when Susie finds her mother figure in Blanc. Although their relationship felt strangely romantic to me or perhaps my mind was too fucked up to comprehend things properly. The other women try to form a motherly bond with the students. Thus, Guadagnino establishes the theme of motherhood and how the relationship has a significant influence on both the parties.
In Suspiria, the frames are dull and devoid of any joy or life. The women have an eerie vibe to them. They are the type of people from whom you should stay away. There kind words and mannerisms seem too good to be true. They persuade with there charm and trap you in their web of horrors. The next time you meet someone overly kind without any reason, the chances may be that something sinister might be going on in the background without your knowledge. It is also possible that the person who you try to trap may have been hiding his other insidious side. The hunter may become the hunted. Suspiria is not an easy film to watch but my god how much I enjoyed its wickedness and nightmarish visuals. The twist in the climax doesn't cheat and is placed there with hints that are dropped in places throughout the film. Overall, it's an experience that may reward some and disgust others.
