Wildlife - Movie Review
A child takes on a role of playing the adult when his family starts falling apart due to the sudden departure of his father for a job.
Cast - Jake Gyllenhaal, Carey Mulligan, Ed Oxenbould, Bill Camp
Directed By - Paul Dano
Genre - Drama
Every family is dysfunctional. The right time and the situation brings out the abnormal behaviour in every human being. A child looks up to his parents and sees a role model in them just like Joe (Ed Oxenbould) looks smilingly towards his parents believing that nothing could tear them apart. His parents Jeanette (Carey Mulligan) and Jerry (Jake Gyllenhaal) love him immensely. He is a bright child who completes his homework on time, regularly goes to the school and plays football afterwards. He even helps his father in the country club where he works as a golf pro. One day, his father is fired from the job and decides to go firefighting in the forest.
His decision upsets Jeanette who has now taken up a job of a swimming instructor and tries to stop him. Meanwhile, Joe takes up a job at a photography studio. They all try to make ends meet, but Jerry who insists himself on being the alpha male of the house goes in the forests. While Joe remains optimistic of his father's return, Jeanette puts on an imprudent attitude and hooks up with one of her students, Warren Miller (Bill Camp), a rich old man owning a car dealership.
But how do you show this separation cinematically? What Dano does is that he puts each of the three characters individually in different shots while they ride on a cycle, a car and a bus.
With Wildlife, Paul Dano marks his directorial debut. He has also written the screenplay along with Zoe Kazan which is adapted from a novel of the same name by Richard Ford. Dano chooses to express the story with steady frames in which the audience becomes the spectator to some uncomfortable situations. A scene having Joe, Jeanette and Warren in the same frame make up for very uneasy viewing. In moments like these, you wish for the camera to look away from the situation, but it does linger a bit longer keeping us trapped tightly in some awkward conditions.
Jake Gyllenhaal strikes a six again with his extraordinary screen presence. He is one of the best actors to be working today in the industry. Carey Mulligan shines in her career-best performance till date. She has come a long way from her An Education days and keeps getting better and stronger. Ed Oxenbould is a revelation who leaves a lasting impression with his dazzling eyes. Bill Camp was convincing as the sweet devil in disguise.
Much of the Wildlife is like a ticking bomb that threatens to go off any minute. The tension is ominous, and the scares get personal. It is one of the finest films made on a dysfunctional family if not the best. Its observations are real, and that itself is frightening. You never know what may trigger the breakdown of a happy relationship in the family. Perhaps, some things need to be broken in order to fix them..again.
