Genre - Horror, Drama, Mystery
Dan Gilroy's new film is a satire on the art world and its pretentious inhabitants. These high profile personalities visit or host art exhibitions to show off their piece of works. Every art comes with its critics and so, here we have Morf Vandewalt (Jake Gyllenhaal), who with his round glasses analyses the paintings and reviews them. He is the god of this world whose words can either build or destroy someone's work in the community. Some artists had even gone into depression and killed themselves because of his negative review. He is so critical and selective that he also despises a coffin because of its colour. Then there is Rhodora Haze (Rene Russo), an art gallery owner whose tattoo, located on the back of the neck, suggests that she was a former band member. The name of the band being "Velvet Buzzsaw". Her employees have a hard time working with her.
The main plot sets in motion when one of Haze's work partner Josephina (Zawe Ashton) finds a dead body in her apartment and on further investigation, comes across his paintings. She is fascinated by his work and decides to show it to Morf who becomes equally impressed. The movie then slow burns the horror within as the blood starts spurting in front of the screen.
You may not know the meaning of Velvet Buzzsaw but it is a cool name just like the paintings that look ordinary to a normal person but for those having a keen eye for these things may find some deeper meaning in it. There may or may not be anything extraordinary in those canvas of colours. In one of the hilarious scenes in the film, a character acknowledges a bag of plastics as a fantastic piece of art, but in fact, it turned out to be not. How many times have we tried to camouflage ourselves among our friends to indulge in their fancy talks despite knowing nothing about the topic at hand?
The overhead shots of the city are wonderful and some of the best in recent times. It makes itself a part of the frame.
Dan Gilroy is the writer-director here who is best known for his Oscar-worthy work Nightcrawler. He yet again collaborates with Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo for this movie. They seem to have developed an understanding with each other.
Velvet Buzzsaw is no different from the art it exhibits. Some may find it to be just another horror movie while others may perceive it as a masterpiece with many layers. It does have an interesting concept though. It is a smart film, or at least it paints itself to be. Is it really clever or pretentious? Its for you to decide as opinions would be polarised. Although it didn't blow me away as Nightcrawler did, I believe the experience would be more rewarding with a second or third viewing. Feel free to check it out on Netflix this weekend.
