Genre - Romance, Drama
Balbir (Anil Kapoor) is a rich businessman who deals in garments. We come to know about his dream of being a chef, which got shattered when his family disapproved. But that doesn't stop him from sneaking into the kitchen at night to cook food for his pleasure. Her daughter Sweety (Sonam Kapoor Ahuja) is constantly being persuaded into marriage with another boy. The problem is that she is not into boys. She loves Kuhu (Regina Cassandra) with whom she plans to move away to London where their lesbian relationship would find acceptance. Both the father and the daughter are made to sacrifice their dreams due to the pressure from the family and the society, and so when Balbir says "Tu toh mere pe gayi hai" (You are like me), his words carry more weight than meets the eye. They both took the same route but on different trains.
Then there is Sahil Mirza (Rajkummar Rao) who wants to write a romantic story that touches the heart. Even Chatro (Juhi Chawla) spends most of the time "mind-shattering" with her acting when she is more successful in catering. Sweety's brother reflects the current mind of the families who still consider a gay relationship to be a disease.
The central characters are made to do work for which they didn't sign up for, but they do it anyway. They are a pillar for the films main plot which is marketed as the first mainstream Hindi movie to deal with a lesbian relationship. Eventually, everything leads to the "follow your heart" message whether it may be professionally or romantically. In a way, ELKDTAL feels more like a video made for educational purposes for the Indian society than a feature film focused on the lesbian relationship.
Since it is the first Indian film to deal with this sensitive subject, it can be seen how director Shelly Chopra Dhar who wrote the screenplay along with Gazal Dhaliwal mostly play it safe. They distract the audience with the help of other characters and some humour before throwing everything to the face during the final moments. Subtlety is not the word here as the filmmakers want to shine the brightest light they have on the subject.
ELKDTAL comes from a sincere place. So much effort and care have been put into the execution to make it accessible. All the actors are honest with there performances. It also marks the debut of Regina Cassandra in the Bollywood industry.
This movie may be the first to deal with such a complex topic but not the best although it is definitely a step in the right direction and a cue for churning out more such stories in the future. While our jurisdiction has legalised LGBTQ, it is still a long way to go before the society gets matured and starts accepting these couples.
