Clara - Movie Review

An obsessive astronomer and an artist form an unlikely bond to discover life beyond the Earth.

Cast - Patrick J. Adams, Troian Bellisario, Kristen Hager, Ennis Esmer

Directed By - Akash Sherman

Genre - Sci-Fi, Romance

Scientists have been continuously searching for life on the other planets. The thought of something alien living beyond our gaze into the deep dark corners of the galaxy is fascinating. Imagine meeting someone like you or someone having the same interests as you but from a different planet. This may very well be possible in the future, but for now, we can satisfy ourselves with this thought.

Dr Isaac Bruno (Patrick J. Adams) makes sure that our curiosity doesn't fade away. He is determined to find any signs of life out there in the space. Obsession can be another word for his curiosity that has taken away his interest from the surrounding human touch. His obsession comes from a personal area, a tragic incident which results in a loss of a loved one. He even breaks the rules for his research which costs him professionally. Enter Clara (Troian Bellisario), an artist who can learn things quickly. She starts assisting Issac with his work but ends up doing something more. She changes his life both professionally and personally.

Although Akash Sherman's Clara revolves around the story of finding the extraterrestrial life, it doesn't just stop there and takes time to explore its characters relationship. It's more about finding closure and moving on where the "life beyond the Earth" thing acts as a catalyst. Its concept of coping up with grief by throwing yourself far away from the surrounding (in this case space) can be compared to Damien Chazelle's First Man where an astronaut goes to the Moon in order to connect again with his family. Both Isaac and Neil use the outer space as a mode of escapism from there grieving lives.

Clara comes from the good Canadian land and meditates for almost 105 minutes. I looked up online and found that Clara means bright or clear. She clears the dark clouds of doubt and preoccupation on Isaac's mind and brightens him up with a new perspective. She lives up to her name, and Troian adds an extra layer of sweetness to the character. Troian and Adams are married in real life. It was good seeing them together on screen. At times the movie feels stretched and overstays its welcome, but thankfully, it never goes out of focus.
