Happy Death Day 2U - Movie Review
The deadly loop is back with a twist as the protagonist has to live the same day over and over again in this horror sequel.
Cast - Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard, Phi Vu, Suraj Sharma, Sarah Yarkin
Directed By - Christopher Landon
Genre - Sci-Fi, Slasher, Comedy, Mystery
Many times you wonder how you would have taken certain decisions if given another chance. It can be something like being rude to someone or as simple as a bad purchase. But second chances are a fiction and decisions one's made cannot be reverted. With movies like Edge of Tomorrow and Happy Death Day, we come to see both the advantages and disadvantages of living the same day again and again. At first, we are confused, and then we start enjoying it and finally it becomes frustrating.
You might remember Tree (a terrific, terrific, terrific Jessica Rothe) from Happy Death Day which just came back in 2017. She reprises her character again in this sequel which takes place shortly after the events of the first one. She is in a happy relationship with her boyfriend, Carter (Israel Broussard) after successfully closing the loop in the previous film. Since happiness is temporary and there is a word "Happy" before "Death Day" in the title, the loop starts haunting Tree again but this time with a scientific twist. What's more enjoyable than watching someone repeatedly die, right?
While Happy Death Day was more about the horror and the suspense regarding the identity of the masked killer, the sequel focuses more on entertainment and explanations. It tells us the reason behind the time loop which was not shown in the trailers so I won't spoil here. The comedy dominates horror, and the result is surprisingly a whole lot of fun.
Like many sequels, Happy Death Day 2U aims for higher and bigger achievement. Sequels are obsessed with expanding the storyline which sometimes works and other times does not. Happy Death Day 2U may or may not work according to your expectations with this movie. For those going in for more horror and suspenseful sequences maybe disappointed while those seeking pure, mindless entertainment would be overjoyed.
I enjoyed this movie, and I believe this is one of the better sequels to have come out recently. The jokes may not always land, and the jump scares may be outdated, but for the entirety of it, you will not be bored as there is enough heart and laugh here to make up for a jolly good time.
Rating - 3.5/5
