Us Movie Review - Double Trouble

A family is attacked by there doppelgangers turning their vacation into a nightmare.

Cast - Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex

Directed By - Jordan Peele

Genre - Horror, Mystery, Thriller

The idea of someone looking exactly like you existing in a different dimension or planet has crossed many minds. I used to have lengthy and exciting discussions with my friends on this topic. Us takes away all the joy from it and makes sure that a feeling of creepiness crawls under your skin the next time you try to overwhelm yourself with this theory.

Director Jordan Peele who stormed 2017 with his horror hit Get Out returns with a chilling story of a family who gets invaded by there lookalikes. Adelaide (Lupita Nyong'o) and her husband Gabe (Winston Duke) go to a beach house along with there kids Zora (Shahadi Wright Joseph) and Jason (Evan Alex) for a nice family picnic. A trip to a beach brings back a sinister past, and soon they find themselves head-to-head with another family who looks like there mirror images.

The doppelgangers call themselves as the "Tethered". They are the shadows of there human counterparts walking with them step-by-step on the beach imitating their actions trying to overgrow them. They are dark and gloomy. Their red jumpsuit shouts blood all over the place while the scissors are used to cut off their "human" existence.

The above synopsis barely covers up the horrifying and gruesome scares that grow on you for almost two hours. Special mention to Michael Abels for that nightmarish score which jumps on you from any direction making you go numb with fear. Mike Gioulakis' cinematography and Nicholas Monsour's editing heighten the experience. The story from Peele brings freshness again to the table, and he should be appreciated for his inventiveness and contribution to the horror genre. At a time when plots are being recycled, and studios are turning towards reboots, Peele stands out with his vision and is among the few who are working hard to keep this genre fresh and alive.

Nowadays, many movies are following a trend of introducing a joke during an intense scene or dialogue. I believe it to be the curse of the Marvel. It does not always land and has a jarring effect when not timed correctly. Us uses it more smartly without highlighting or over-indulging in it. The result feels natural and genuine.

While the adults Duke and especially Lupita would be praised for there terrific performances, the major surprises here are the kids Wright Joseph and Alex. If a child is seen as innocent and a reflection of God then these kids would make you scream with horror as they unleash the demon within all the while smiling away creepily at your faces.

Like Get Out, Us would be more rewarding on second viewing. Watch out for small clues that you might have missed initially. Some of the things don't make sense, and things start falling apart when given too much thought to it. But for a movie which aims to scare the audience, it not only gives away goosebumps but also terrifies with its unnerving display of violence and blood.
