Shazam! Movie Review - Coming-of-Age Origin Story

The new instalment in the DCEU balances doses of laughter on a coming-of-age superhero origin story.

Cast - Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer

Directed By - David F. Sandberg

Genre - Superhero, Sci-Fi, Fantasy

You say his name, and you get his powers. This is what happens in Shazam! where a young Billy (Asher Angel) transforms into an adult version of himself (Zachary Levi) complete with electrifying superpowers. What he does next is something almost any child would do if he found out that he has suddenly become invincible and on top of that he can alter between his younger and older self. From testing his skills to buying beer from the shop, he does everything. He even gets access inside a bar. His nerdy best friend Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer) helps him to discover his superpowers which included shooting bullets and throwing fire. They also manage to make money out of this business.

But Billy was just a random shot among millions of variables. Since, an ancient wizard, by the name of Shazam, is getting old and the enemy has risen, he almost forces Billy to take up the "great power and great responsibility" task so that the supervillain could be stopped. Dr Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong) enters the shoes of the supervillain. He has family issues, and a flashback scene at the beginning reveals his outcasting from his brother and father. All he wants is to prove them of his capability but becomes sinister after acquiring superpowers. His superpowers are fueled by the seven deadly sins - pride, greed, lust, gluttony, wrath, sloth and envy. These sins make him a supervillain, and when they leave his body, he just turns into an ordinary villain. It's a nice message for the little kids, and this movie also manages to integrate the concept of family and unity. Be sure to educate them afterwards if they miss the point. For adults, it may be a bit too much on the nose.

Superhero movies are known to follow the same old tropes. A good guy and a bad guy get hold of some powers and have a face off during the climax. So what else can you do to keep the material fresh and running? Recently, a new trend of mocking these cliches have taken a great following especially after the massive success of Deadpool. But even they have started getting out-of-date. Shazam! works because of the POV (Point of View) as the children save the day both literally and figuratively. Zachary Levi, Asher Angel and Jack Dylan are off the charts while the others are good enough to get the job done.

David F. Sandberg has directed this film. He is better known for making horror movies like Lights Out (2016) and Annabelle: Creation (2017). It is then only natural that some of the scenes in Shazam! are shot like a horror film with jump scares. The dark phase of the DCEU is getting overshadowed by light which is a good thing. In the end, Shazam! does do justice to the exclamation mark in the title.
