Annabelle Comes Home Movie Review - A Disappointment Which Could Have Been Better
Cast - Mckenna Grace, Madison Iseman, Katie Sarife, Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Michael Cimino
Directed By - Gary Dauberman
Genre - Horror
The highly threatening possessed doll comes back to scare the shit out of you in this sequel to 2014's Annabelle and 2017's Annabelle: Creation which is also the seventh instalment in the Conjuring universe. The problem is just that it is not scary at all. Horror movies are known to get worse by the sequels, and while there was still hope after Creation, Annabelle Comes Home drains away all the optimism and returns to ground zero.
The plot, if you call it, is about Judy (an outstanding Mckenna Grace) who is left with a babysitter Mary Ellen (Madison Iseman) in Warren's house of demonic artefacts as Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) go out for some business. Why will you leave your child in a haunted house? It would have been better if Judy had been sent to Mary Ellen's house. The amount of trust the Warren's have on their child is impressive. Of course, I don't blame them because Judy is the kind of kid who seems to be so mature for her age. This is shown in a scene where Judy while having breakfast sees the headline on a newspaper which calls her parents fraud. When Lorraine enters the room, she covers the paper with her plate.
But as is the general tradition, stupid decisions are needed to be taken in order to unleash the demons in the house. To make such decisions, you need a stupid character and so enters Daniela (Katie Sarife) who is there to do everything a normal person wouldn't dare to do in real life. She is responsible for releasing Annabelle and putting the others in danger. To the film's credit, it takes the pain to explain the reasons behind her motivations, but that didn't work for me when it came to releasing the evil doll. Then again, we are here to experience horror and cry out in terror, or at least the characters have to go through it because Annabelle Comes Home is not as terrifying as it should have been.
The movie can be summed up by saying that the characters take a long walk in the corridors before encountering something in the dark which comes shouting at them, leading to a full-blown scream and lots of running. Sadly, 90% of scares are achieved using this technique, and those long, slow tracking shots get boring in a few minutes. Most of them failed to land as the payoff to the buildup was very poor. In the name of horror, it is just a collection of jump scares that are thrown at your face but except one or two, the others fail to make you bounce from the seats.
Talking of jump scares, I think they are executed wonderfully. Some of them are very innovative like the one with coins and the other with a shadow on the wall, which keeps on getting bigger as different colours of lights pass through it. They are not new, but just an update of the old tried and tested formula. Even the movie is well-made and all that but in the end, if you are not scared, then what is the point of submitting yourself to a horror film. The worse thing is that the movie had a lot of potential to scare the daylight out of you, but it plays it safe by using the oldest and lamest trick in the book. This was even the problem with the other two Conjuring films - The Nun and The Curse of La Llorona.
Deep down, I think that this film could have been better if it were a drama. Judy is bullied in the school because of her parent's profession. The family fights against the false claims made on them, which is almost every day. In spite of all the trash news against them, they manage to keep there heads high and go on with there day. I could see an excellent and exciting family drama - The Warrens vs the World. My wish won't come true and even worse would be the fact that the filmmakers may also render this idea lazily on screen. Let's hope Ari Aster strikes fear effectively next week with his latest horror Midsommar.
