Article 15 Movie Review - A Powerful and Rousing Entertainer

Some of the scenes in Article 15 shows the protagonist Ayan (Ayushmann) surrounded by fog. He is from urban India and is yet to discover the rural side of it or see beyond the fog if you may. When he does encounter the "other side", his life changes, and it feels like someone has just dropped a bomb on him. His casual texts praising the surroundings of the area turn into disgust through which he channels his internal anger and confusion to Aditi (Isha Talwar).
The movie takes its cue from the 2014 Badaun gang-rape case. Two girls are found hanging from a tree while the third remains missing. Ewan Mulligan's haunting cinematography here sends shivers down the spine. Since the case belongs to a lower section of the society, the police stay negligible and even tells that these kinds of things are common among them. People disappear and reappear in their community. Ayan is disgusted by this fact and starts an investigation on the case. In fact, he is so frustrated by this system that he even shouts "What the FUCK" during a scene in which he tries to understand the various castes.
Director Anubhav Sinha has changed with time. He has come a long way since Cash, Ra. One and Tum Bin 2. This change was first seen last year in Mulk, and now he raises his voice again in Article 15. His sudden urge to represent a certain section of the society is commendable. As was evident in Mulk, subtlety is not his cup of tea as he likes to take you by the collar and shout his thoughts in your ear. This type of filmmaking is dangerous because they tend to lose steam very quickly. But do it right, and you get a gripping drama like Mulk and Article 15. Sinha makes sure that the message is received loud and clear. It is this clarity in his voice that contributes to the significant success of this film. He uses everything at his disposal to highlight his thoughts, which can be both verbally and visually. For instance, you may see a character pouring his heart out about the problems faced by the less privileged people of the society. The movie even opens with Gaura (a scene-stealing Sayani Gupta) singing a song which highlights the divide between the rich and the poor. He also uses imagery like a man drowning himself in the sewers. My favourite includes a scene in which the police station is clogged with the sewage water, and Ayan crosses it by stepping on the stones only to find another police officer (an incredible Manoj Pahwa) who is also a bad person in the film.
In the beginning, a character narrates Ramayan's story in which after Lord Ram victoriously returned home; he found that unlike other villages, one of them was not lit with candles. Upon asking they revealed that their candles blew out because of the wind and later they realised that Lord Ram's palace looked brighter when their village was not illuminating. Today, it is a common scenario in which the crimes from the smaller communities are rarely covered and bought to the notice. People are busy with absurd religious practices and have blown many important pressing matters under the carpet. Forget the crimes; we don't even know the names of those small places. Their lights have been dimmed from the brightness of the big cities.
Article 15 is that rare mainstream entertainer which deserves applause for mixing the ingredients right. This is that film which every Akshay Kumar starrer wants to be but gets blinded due to the presence of the star - a big bright star. In fact, it is much better than any recent patriotic Akshay Kumar films. I was engaged, entertained, and when the time came, my chests thumped with excitement, which is more than I expect from a mainstream Bollywood film.
