Spider-Man: Far From Home Movie Review - Swing Away

Cast - Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jake Gyllenhaal, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Jacob Batalon

Directed By - Jon Watts

Genre - Superhero, Fantasy, Sci-Fi

After the devastating death of Tony Stark, Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) is left in grief, but he doesn't just sit around crying. In fact, he is shown attending conferences and clicking photos with fans. Of course, he grieves on the top of a building overlooking a graffiti of Iron Man and other places which is whenever he realises how lonely he feels without Tony. So to take his mind off this subject, he decides to go on a school trip to Venice hoping to catch a break from all the superhero stuff and confess his love to MJ (Zendaya). What he doesn't realise is that the Spider-Man can take a vacation from the problems, but the problems won't stop following him around. You know its like "once a superhero, always a superhero". The problems are the celestial beings which threaten to destroy the Earth.

Enter Mysterio (the always dependable Jake Gyllenhaal) whose character is shrouded with mystery. Going any further would be to enter the spoilers and given the interesting twists and turns in the film, it's best to avoid them here. I must confess, watching Gyllenhaal and Holland together was very exciting. Any scene which had the two of them together was like a treat to the eyes and senses. In fact, Jake Gyllenhaal was supposed to replace Toby Maguire in Raimi's Spider-Man 2. It's good to finally see him entering the MCU after so many years.

Jon Watts is back in the director's seat, and Far From Home like its predecessor is again a school romance wearing a superhero costume. This is bigger and better than the first one. Peter acts and does things, stupid things, like a teenager, would do, and that makes him more neighbourhood friendly and relatable. Tom Holland is the perfect embodiment of this superhero. Surprisingly, this film puts in effort for some other side characters like a socially active boy who would very much prefer to connect with his virtual friends. Of course, the film just provides lip service to the character but then when was the last time you saw a big-budget, star-packed film provide "depth" to a side character?

Far From Home also manages to show the two sides of the always growing technology. You can write an essay on the topic with the title - Technology: A Boon or a Bane. It's fun to pick out these small things from the Marvel movies as they have become a go-to destination for the comic book devotees. Even after watching all those superhero movies with big explosive CGI's, you wonder if there is anything new on the table. After all, how many times can a person watch the same thing without getting bored? This is where Marvel takes the cake as they manage to surprise you over and over again. This is the twenty-third film for God's sake, and there are many more to come. Far From Home shifts from romance to action effortlessly without being a mixed bag. Make sure you stay for both the mid-credits and post-credits scenes.
