I Trapped the Devil Movie Review - A Slow Burner That Keeps You Engaged With It's Stylish Direction

Cast - Scott Poythress, A. J. Bowen, Susan Theresa Burke

Directed By - Josh Lobo

Genre - Supernatural, Horror

A surprise visit from the family is generally a delight. Unless of course, you are Steve (Scott Poythress) who has trapped the devil or at least someone in the basement. It's Christmas, but it is definitely not Santa Claus who is held as the hostage here. Steve is scared of him and even asks his brother Matt (A. J. Bowen) to leave who along with his wife Karen (Susan Burke) has come to spend the festival with him. Seeing Karen, he reluctantly allows them to stay and then lets them onto this devil trapping secret.

Who is the devil? Has he really locked the evil in the basement? If not, then who has he locked up? Is he insane? Is it all inside his head? Who is on the phone? These, along with many other questions linger on your mind, but this film refuses to offer any concrete explanation. For those who like to be spoon fed or hate slow burners, stay away from this film as it will scratch your brains out. It progresses slowly towards the finale, and when it finally arrives, you hope for some answers or at least a hint, but the film leaves you cold and cuts to the credits. You don't get closure, and some might even feel betrayed.

For a movie titled I Trapped the Devil, you do expect to experience horror, apparitions, jump scares or a cameo from the Satan himself. I won't tell if any of these happen or not, but I do believe that it plays out more like a thriller than horror. The title does mislead a bit and may let down many who go in expecting to see something else.

Then again, Josh Lobo has so beautifully crafted this film that you somehow don't end up completely neglecting it. I was engaged throughout, and that was because of its excellent use of lighting, editing and framing which keeps you going and makes you appreciate the director's craft and passion for giving it all to this film. The way he manages to create the claustrophobic setting is praiseworthy. I am excited to see what he does in the future.

The actors are simply outstanding. Scott Poythress masterfully switches from meek to insane and back without any strain. A fantastic A. J. Bowen is equally supported by the vulnerable Susan Burke. The casting is perfect.

I Trapped the Devil is atmospheric and somewhat better than many big Hollywood disposable blockbusters out there. It surely is not inviting, and many will dismiss it for being pretentious. Perhaps a little more peek behind the doors could have made it better and easier to wrap our heads around, but I certainly do respect for what it is able to achieve and the risks it took in the process. I am sure as hell watching it again.
