Kabir Singh - Movie Review
Cast - Shahid Kapoor, Kiara Advani, Arjan Bajwa
Directed By - Sandeep Vanga
Genre - Romance, Drama
The movie opens with a shot of Preeti (Kiara Advani) lying on top of Kabir (Shahid Kapoor). The couples are shown in isolation near a beach covered in white sheets. They could very well be Adam and Eve. Next, we hear about Kabir's childhood and how he stopped eating and sleeping when he lost his favourite toy. He might have physically grown up, but from inside, he remains the same. Only this time, his "toy" comes in the form of Preeti to whose father he even promises that he would take care of her.
Kabir declares her as his "bandi" (girl) and warns the other boys of the college to maintain a distance. He starts to care and pick her up from the classes to teach, roam around and to have sex with her. He is a hot-headed college topper who picks up a fight during the football match while she even struggles to keep eye contact with others. He is vocal and free-spirited while she is quiet and shy. According to the traditional masala movies way, they are meant to be. His anger management issues disappear around Preeti, and so when they get separated, he goes on the path of self-destruction and harm with his rage mode set to a maximum degree. It's no coincidence that he chose his college because he liked the cold weather as that coolness helps in calming down the hot-headed demon within him.
Sandeep Vanga's Kabir Singh is almost precisely a frame to frame remake of his original Telugu film Arjun Reddy. I don't recommend watching this remake if you have already watched the original unless of course, you are a die-hard Shahid Kapoor fan. Nothing much has been altered in this remake, and even the minor things which are changed don't make much of the difference. This is an unconventional love story which does suffer from the same old generic cliches during the first half, a problem which I also had with Arjun Reddy. It is only during the interval when the name of the protagonist appears on the screen, and the movie commits to the character in the second half. Harshavardhan Rameshwar's perfectly timed rousing score keeps the whistles blowing from the audience and makes up for a full-blown mainstream entertainer.
Shahid is Kabir, and this is his film all along. He dissolves into this hateful character without begging for mercy. He gulps down bottles and puffs the smoke on the screen.
The censorship here is both weird and takes away the foul vibe from it. Fingers are blurred, and Hindi abuses are muted, but the word fuck passes the A certificate test. Perhaps all those drinks and smokes could have messed up the board's brain.
