Arjun Patiala Movie Review - Old Wine In A New Bottle

Cast - Diljit Dosanjh, Varun Sharma, Kriti Sanon, Ronit Roy, Seema Pahwa, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Pankaj Tripathi

Directed By - Rohit Jugraj

Genre - Romance, Spoof, Comedy

Spoofs are known to be a mindless take on an established storyline which, if it wants, can be very observational or mind-numbingly lazy. Reviewing a good or bad movie is easier than the spoof genre. Hollywood has made money out of it by churning some good ones (Scary Movie) into a torrent of sequels and reboots. While Bollywood may still take some time to develop a good spoof film, Arjun Patiala is surely a welcome addition to this space.

The film begins with a writer requesting a producer (Pankaj Tripathi) for a narration of his script. "Teen saal se bhujia pav kha ke likhi hai" he says to convince him for the reading. We are then taken into the story where the Hero (Diljit Dosanjh), Hero ka Dost (Varun Sharma), Hero ki Heartbeat (Kriti Sanon), Villains 1, 2, 3, 4 are introduced in a typical mainstream way. The funky opening Bond-style credits promise 2 hours of good time, and to the film's credit, it does manage to fulfil some of this "hassi ka waada". See, it did have some effect on me. Some scenes like the one where Arjun breaks into a song from Aashiqui or the one where Kriti walks in the rain covered in white saree or the one where Arjun talks to his friend inside water is all very fascinating and effective. You can almost see how this could have been one of the best films from this genre.

Diljit and Varun are the only ones having a blast here. It is evident that they had enjoyed playing their characters. These two make up for a very electrifying presence on the screen and will probably help in keeping you glued to your seats. Kriti Sanon is there for...well, to go easy on the eyes with her perfect body, hair and whatnot. A scene where she narrates her backstory is drawn out visually using chalky cartoons. It does manage to hide her shortcomings during the emotional beat. Ronit Roy, Seema Pahwa and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, as usual, are terrific in their parts

Sadly, Arjun Patiala falls under the same pit which it had started digging for the others. One starts to wonder if the whole narrative device was just merely an excuse for recycling the old bottle. The charm begins to wear off, and you wish for it to pick up or at least end our sufferings by rolling the credits. Again, it surprisingly manages to hold up even after these terrible moments. Here, the sum of its parts is greater than the whole.
