Judgementall Hai Kya Movie Review - Madly In Love

Cast - Kangana Ranaut, Rajkummar Rao

Directed By - Prakash Kovelamudi

Genre - Black Comedy, Mystery, Drama

On the surface, Judgementall Hai Kya is a very curious and odd-looking case. It is nothing less than a 2 hour long LSD trip resulting in a severe hangover. It is a nightmare which is equal parts fascinating and horrifying, which opens with a girl facing the horror of her life - the death of her parents. Their bodies are literally framed in red. The other frightening thing is the fact that she was made to witness the horrors of domestic violence almost every day. The girl grows up to be Kangana Ranaut who has still not recovered from the childhood trauma and thus, judges the world through her suspicious eyes. Shit starts to get real when Keshav (Rajkummar Rao) and Reema (Amyra Dastur) move in next door and Bobby (Ranaut) starts suspecting Keshav of ulterior motives.

Shot in over-saturated colours, Judgementall Hai Kya often puts it's lead characters in front of the mirrors to reflect the other side of there personalities. We first see Bobby in three different reflections, and then we see her various photoshopped images. She is a dubbing artist by profession and a passionate actor by heart. Imitating different characters is her job, which further complicates our perception of her. Is she telling the truth? Is she lying? What if she is hallucinating things? The film very subtly uses this trope to highlight how good an actor Kangana really is and how unreliable her character can be. After all, actors are natural liars. She is the heart and soul without whom this could have been a total dud and very least convincing. She owns the mental part by preferring asylum over paying the fine, and she is judgmental with her notions about men. She holds not only the film but also the title. This does not mean that others fall under her shadow. Rajkummar Rao, as usual, is fantastic to watch, and the supporting cast including Amyra Dastur, Jimmy Shergil, Amrita Puri, Satish Kaushik and Brijendra Kala are fabulous.

There is no doubt that this film will be spoken in the same breath as Andhadhun. People will dissect and analyze its content, which has volumes to teach about the use of lighting and screenplay writing (A big shoutout to the writer Kanika Dhillon). Of course, I consider this and Andhadhun to be very different films, and all the comparisons would be made because of there deviation from the mainstream approach of filmmaking. Of course, Judgementall Hai Kya is more experimental and takes huge risks than Raghavan's mind-blowing thriller. But that does not make it perfect as it runs into some problems of its own.

A movie should be judged on how it has been made, and we should not tamper it by putting our expectations on them, although everyone goes inside a theatre with some speculation. I have a habit of keeping myself contained, which does help in making the experience more enjoyable. Having said that, I did notice how this film held back from going all bananas on us and settled for playing it safe. I admit it was disappointing to see something as explosive as this to go for merely a spark. This realization strikes during the climax, which drains out almost all the tension and fun which was built before. A more friendly approach is taken, and the message becomes muddled. The ending may be serviceable, but it does not have a significant impact, which usually movies like these tend to give (American Psycho comes to mind). I was neither taken aback or amused by any of it, and yet, I didn't hate it, but it was sorely lacking. It could have still been better if it had ended with that smile. Also, the overuse of a particular background score didn't help in any way.

Watching Judgementall Hai Kya, I was reminded of Kashyap's brain-scratching thriller No Smoking, which was way more trusting of its audience and is one of the best works of the director. It was a box office bomb as people failed to understand it. Many labelled it as pretentious and threw it in a trash. It has now gained cult status, but the filmmakers faced heavy losses at that time. Maybe that is the reason why Judgementall Hai Kya makes itself a bit friendly and goes on to highlight things for the masses. I don't think it did any good and may have further polarized some cinephiles. Nevertheless, despite all its shortcomings, this film is original and a first-rate piece of cinema. It is audacious and funny and nightmarish and a rare offering from the camp of Bollywood.
