Batla House Movie Review - A Thrilling Encounter
Cast - John Abraham, Mrunal Thakur, Ravi Kishan, Manish Chaudhari, Nora Fatehi
Directed By - Nikkhil Advani
Genre - Action, Thriller, Drama, Mystery
I don't remember enjoying a John Abraham film as much as Batla House recently. This new Nikkhil Advani directorial feature is engaging and well-crafted. It is inspired by the controversial Batla House encounter case that took place on 19 September 2008. Instead of filling up the runtime with a Wikipedia entry, Batla House interests itself with intensely paced chases and a jigsaw-like puzzle. The lead character ACP Sanjay Kumar (John Abraham) suffers from PTSD after the death of his friend, Inspector KK Verma (Ravi Kishan), during the Batla encounter. He becomes paranoid and imagines gunshots being fired at him. He even pulls out a gun in front of his wife (Mrunal Thakur) who gets to do more than just being the "lady in the man's life." She is a news reporter. When the protests are held against the Delhi Police, we get to see her arguing in the office. She is not there to just cry around and make the hero comfortable, which she does, but she also fights with him. This is something not often seen in these kinds of Bollywood movies.
You might have seen John Abraham play this kind of part before but never has he felt more suitable and deserving of the character. This is his best work and performance in recent times. Part of the reason Batla House works so effectively is because of the actor himself. Those smiles and anger come naturally to him, and no one could have done a better job in selling them than Abraham.
Batla House is Nikkhil Advani's most arresting film to date. I even liked Katti Batti despite all the criticisms surrounding it. I loved how the story here unfolded in bits and pieces. The information is revealed along with the characters, which makes up for a fun exercise. Maahir Zaveri's grim editing and John Stewart Eduri's suspenseful and rousing background score is blissful. The claustrophobic framing of some scenes is very impactful.
The way John's character is portrayed gives the film an opportunity to show a national flag moment and a big monologue during the final court scene. I wish it had messed with the perception of the audience a bit more. It tries but does not have a solid impact. Batla House takes the side of the police and in a sincere way. What it gives is way beyond anything you would see from a movie of this genre and story. This is a very satisfying investigative thriller.
