Akshay Kumar's latest patriotic ride takes us on a mission to Mars. It promises a real-life experience beyond the clouds but frequently bumps on the way. Comparisons can be made with "Mota Bacha", the unsuccessful rocket which fails disastrously in the beginning. Mission Mangal, like that rocket, takes a good upward flight but then comes crashing down miserably.
ISRO's first interplanetary expedition is named as MOM (Mars Orbiter Mission), and so director Shakti decides to open this film with... Mom. Well, this Mom is a hardworking housewife/Project Director Tara Shinde (Vidya Balan) who not only manages her house but also later in the film, manages her team. This team consists of a NASA aspirant Eka Gandhi (Sonakshi Sinha), a religious virgin Parmeshwar Naidu (Sharman Joshi), a divorcee (Kirti Kulhari), Kritika (Taapsee Pannu) who wants a driving license, a soon-to-be-mother Varsha (Nithya Menen) and an old Ananth Iyer (H. G. Dattatreya). The characters have to solve both personal and professional problems.
As mentioned above, the movie begins with Tara, and much of the parallel is drawn between her household life and her ISRO job. Her name is Tara, which literally means star. She is the driving force behind this mission and the main source of inspiration for the Mars project. This might be the first Akshay Kumar film where his character is the one getting inspired by someone else to bring a change as it is Tara who changes his cynic mind. When she comes up with the challenge of influencing her team's mindset towards there job, she gets the solution by fixing the relationship between the members of her family. In fact, she is the one who comes up with the idea of saving fuel by working in the kitchen.
Meanwhile, Varsha gives way to the MOM reference in the film while the other members pick up inspiration from there surroundings. It looks childish, but the idea of finding a big solution from your surroundings fascinated me to an extent. After all, science is everywhere. All you need to do is just observe.
The problem begins when the film suddenly decides to take a turn and enters into the zone of women empowerment. I don't know what happened on the sets, but this change was jarring and way out of place. They don't even try to make it natural or a part of the story. In spite of that out-of-place train sequence and Kumar giving way to the ladies, in the end, it still feels like Akshay did all the heavy lifting before going all modest and humble. I liked the funny, one-liner Akshay as it belonged with the setting, but when he jumps across the table or argues with his senior, he breaks the character and goes on Khiladi mode. At times, Mission Mangal feels like a TED Talk for a 10-year-old. During others, it becomes a science lesson for the kids. The moment when Tara explains the working of the rocket to her son is the best example. The result of all these different tones and emotions defeat the main purpose of the film, which goes as far away as the planet they try to cover. Mission Mangal has more lows than highs and is definitely a missed opportunity.
