Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood Movie Review - Slow and Steady
Cast - Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Al Pacino, Margaret Qualley, Rafal Zawierucha
Directed By - Quentin Tarantino
Genre - Comedy, Drama, Thriller
This will be my 200th movie review, and nothing makes me happier than the fact that it will be the 9th film from the master director himself - Quentin Tarantino. It has been fun writing about the medium I love the most and would like to thank my readers out there for taking out time from your busy lives to read my insignificant opinions. So without further ado, let's dive into February of 1969 and inside the life of the three main characters of the film.
Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) is an actor whose success is fading into oblivion. He was once the superstar of the Hollywood who starred in the immensely successful Western television series Bounty Law. Shadowing him around is his BFF and stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) who now spends more time tending to the needs of Rick than punching around on the sets. He has a dark past that gives around chuckles a few times. There low and failing lives are cut with the bright and cheery life of Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie), the wife of Roman Polanski (Rafal Zawierucha) and Rick's neighbour. After a bad day when Rick sees them for the first time, he cheers up on the thought that one day he might be able to act in a Polanski directed film. The maker of the horror hit Rosemary's Baby.
Notorious for abruptly ending long conversations with a lot of violence, OUATIH finds the director in a more mature and calm mood. This is also apparent in the title Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood. Notice the three dots (a pause) before the revelation of the location. He is not in a hurry. The graph here is steady and only rises to a peak during the final act. For the rest of the film, he settles the audience and immerses us in this world by using long sequences of conversing, driving and roaming. Another technique he employs is by placing the camera in the backseat of the car, which effectively involves the viewer in the surrounding, taking us along with the ride. The result is so powerful that when the action finally arrives, it bursts out rivers of joy and satisfaction.
The pairing of DiCaprio and Pitt is one of the best things to see this year. DiCaprio's character goes through hell and cries his eyes out on his uncertain career, but the actor manages to infuse those scenes with remarkable comedy. Pitt is charismatic and in a superb form which is seen after a long time. I chuckled at a scene where he climbs up the roof to show off his hunky body. You don't get enough of Al Pacino as he is not around much, but he is a treat to watch whenever on screen. Much has been said about Margot Robbie's very few dialogues. For Tarantino, she is a sign of happiness and cheerfulness who dances happily at a Playboy party. Robbie is mind-blowingly fantastic. There is a scene where she enters into a screening of her own film and enjoys the reaction from the audience. This is the director looking back at his filmography whose traces can be found throughout OUATIH.
Tarantino is known for playing around with his characters. Notice how he also plays with the notion of the "Tate Murders" subversively or with a sequence which takes place in Spahn Ranch.
Many Tarantino fans may label it as his "weakest" work yet. For those who are not fans may consider it downright absurd and annoying. They might even suggest shaving of some scenes and question the importance of watching a whole scene involving a guy making dinner for his dog and himself. We are so conditioned to expect "progression", to see something or a action, from every scene that when a film takes a pause and breathes, we start calling it as uninteresting. For me, OUATIH is yet another masterwork from the genius himself and is something the older Tarantino could not have made. Even if he had attempted, it could have been a disaster because the kind of filmmaking that is on display here comes with a maturity and an immense love for cinema. He had the latter before, but now, he also has the former quality. This is the new Quentin fucking Tarantino baby.
