Parasite/Gisaengchung Movie Review - One Of The Most Important Films Of This Year

Directed By - Bong Joon-ho

Genre - Black Comedy, Thriller

The word parasite is defined as "an organism that lives in another organism, called the host, and often harms it. It depends on its host for survival. Without a host, a parasite cannot live, grow and multiply". If humans are animals, then Kim ki-taek's family is the parasite, and Mr Park's family is the host. At least they are the main host because they also leech of there neighbours Wi-Fi connection. They live in a semi-basement away from the human eyes.

One day, they get a visit from Ki-woo's (Choi Woo-shik) friend Min (Park Seo-joon) who offers them a large rock and takes Ki-woo out for a drink where he confesses his love for a girl and decides to propose her after she gets into a university. Since he is planning to go abroad, he chooses to offer Ki-woo the position of the English tutor. When Ki-woo enters the luxurious house for the first time, he is overwhelmed by the surrounding, and the camera follows his gaze as he gasps in awe. On any other day, this could have been a movie about a boy earning a lot of money to support the needs of his family. But the title of the film is parasite and so this boy starts finding opportunities to implant the other members of his family inside the host, ahem, house.

Director Bong Joon-ho (Memories of Murder, Snowpiercer, Okja) is known for pulling those rugs from under your feet. His films begin with something and then take a sharp, unexpected turn in between. That turning moment occurs here when the Park family goes out for camping while the other family occupies the house. I don't remember the last time I had watched a film or a scene by holding my breath in anticipation with a firm grip on my seat. I was on edge and hooked. The entire scene floored me with its brilliant pacing and unfolding and reminded me why I love watching the movies. Bong Joon-ho is in complete control of his craft, delivering what you may call an "out-of-the-body" experience. The ending misted up my eyes as I watched it through a blurry film of tears. It was so heartbreaking and overwhelming at the same time that I had to go and talk with my friends to cheer up my mood.

I am sorry if I have made Parasite sound like a very dull and melodramatic film. It's just that I have not felt this way for a long time at the movies. Anyway, no, this is not only a sad film made to burst your tears out and has its share of fun and comedy. There is humour to be found here for the majority of its runtime. I enjoyed watching the execution of Ki-woo's plan of replacing his family inside the wealthy house. Yang Jin-mo's stylish editing and Jung Jae-il's entertaining music infuse these sequences with exciting energy.

Even the performances are off the charts here. I am alien towards these actors except Song Kang-ho whose great performance I had seen before in the nail-biting crime-drama Memories of Murder and the sci-fi Snowpiercer. There is an extraordinary drama these actors manage to bring out on screen effortlessly. I loved everyone, especially Ki-woo's sister, played by the marvellous Park So-Dam. The commitment these people have towards there characters is simply amazing.

Parasite won the prestigious Palme d'Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival making it the first Korean film to receive this award. There is no doubt left towards its credibility after watching this very deserving and moving film. In an incredible scene that takes place inside two different basements, the vomit thrown inside a toilet is shown as a flood of dirt spurting out of another one, thus sealing the fate of the characters. How often do you get to see cinema in its visual form of storytelling? When was the last time you saw yourself sympathizing with such immoral people on-screen? When was the last time a filmmaker shattered the divide between the rich and the poor and treated both equally? I wish more people would go and watch Parasite and "spread" it around to there friends and family. After all, when was the last time you got a good feeling by listening to the word parasite?
