Hobbs & Shaw Movie Review - Embracing Silliness

Hobbs & Shaw is a spin-off of the Fast and Furious franchise starring two fan favourites - Luke Hobbs (Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Statham). This one comes from the director of John Wick, Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2 which is good considering that this is an action-heavy film and who else could handle it better than someone who has given some of the best action sequences in recent times.
Guns are fired, cars are exploded, buildings are destroyed and in between all these are Hobbs and Shaw with there banters trying to take down each other. The premise, if not original, at least promises a good time at the theatre with two lovable characters on screen. They are fast and furious and funny. Supporting them is Shaw's kick-ass sister Hattie who is played by the very charming Vanessa Kirby. After gracing us with her presence in Mission: Impossible - Fallout, she returns to steal the hearts again and should definitely be taken more in such action movies. She even dares to take the spotlight away from the two hunky boys. I was happy to see how well they managed to handle her character as she could have easily been reduced to a damsel in distress. Some surprise cameos further extend the comedy.
The movie opens on a promising note and is surprisingly entertaining for a long time. It is during the final act that it starts to wear down with repetitive fight scenes and camera angles. Leitch's previous films had better-choreographed fight sequences. This one was a bit of a mess. But overall this dumb, over-the-top and mindless entertainer would surely pass your time with some decent laughs and provide an escapism from your daily boring life. It does not set out to be pretentious, subtle or Oscar-worthy and knows what would keep the Fast and Furious fans happy and engaged.
