The Angry Birds Movie 2 Movie Review - Surprisingly Better Than The Prequel
Cast - Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Leslie Jones, Danny McBride, Peter Dinklage
Directed By - Thurop Van Orman
Genre - Animation, Comedy
Life in "Bird Island" and "Pig Island" is going as usual. The two sides are always trying to beat down each other by hook or by crook. It's business as usual until one day, the pigs discover a new island, "Eagle Island", which could annihilate both the "Bird and the Pig Island".
But why so serious? Because this is a movie for the children and it is quite a funny one too. It is the sequel to the 2016 okay-ish film The Angry Birds Movie which is based on a video game of the same name. This sequel starts right off the bat and wastes no time in unnecessary setups. It is tighter, funnier and to-the-point, which is one of the best things done to this film. There are no dull moments and plenty of rib-tickling jokes for a good time.
After saving the island in the first film, our hero, Red, has garnered massive respect from his people, and he continues to protect them from the Pigs attacks. He even sends a tsunami in retaliation. But when the aforementioned "Eagle Island" is discovered, the pigs offer to shake hands with the birds to which a reluctant Red eventually agrees. After all, he is the hero, and his people look up to him as a saviour. He has an image to protect. He might have gained attention and some friends, but deep down, Red is lonely. He longs for a companion but is unable to find one. A hilarious speed dating sequence doesn't offer much help to him. It is here where the film tries to teach a lesson to the children in the audience. Being a popular or funny guy in school and college doesn't mean you are perfect and surrounded by a crowd for 24 hours a day. Sometimes, the most popular one in the college turns out to be the loneliest one among the lot. Also, there is a message here of finding your perfect match when the time is right and how friends should not be made based on criteria. All of this is packed in this effective animated comedy that is suited for both the children and the adults.
It has been a while since I had enjoyed an animated film this much and I never expected this joy to come from an Angry Birds movie. To talk about some scenes would only spoil your experience as there are some humorous jokes on display here. There is an entire storyline involving three little birds that felt forced for the sake of the children. It did not entirely work for me, but then, overall, I had some of the best time with this movie which flew in and surprised the hell out of me.
