Kaalakaandi - Movie Review
Cast - Saif Ali Khan, Sobhita Dhulipala, Akshay Oberoi, Kunaal Roy Kapoor, Vijay Raaz, Deepak Dobriyal
Directed By - Akshat Verma
From the writer of Delhi Belly comes the directorial venture of Akshat Verma titled Kaalakaandi, a black comedy that takes place during a rainy night in Mumbai. Verma tells us three stories, one has Saif Ali Khan who finds out from his doctor very casually that he has stomach cancer, second has Vijay Raaz and Deepak Dobriyal who are planning to make it big and earn crores of rupees and the third one is about this couple Kunaal Roy Kapoor and Sobhita Dhulipala who attend a friend's birthday party which gets caught in a drug bust. Of course, these three stories intersect each other further in the film.
Straight out, this film will not be liked by many audiences as I witnessed in the theatre where only three people were present with me. It does not have that typical story telling style or the plot that the Indian audiences have been fed for a long time, the film tries to be different and gives a rather unusual and pleasant experience. The plot unfolds in Pulp Fiction kind of way where three different stories start and then cross each other during the climax. Many directors have told there stories in this way in the past, be it Love Sex aur Dhoka, Lipstick Under my Burkha and now even here in Kaalakaandi. The sequences that involved Saif and his colourful hallucinations, thanks to a drug that he takes, were very enjoyable and were my favourite. Some scenes like the one in which Saif inquires about the "samaan" inside a transgender prostitute or some conversations of Vijay and Deepak were quite hilarious. Even Neil Bhoopalam who is barely in the movie, tickles your bone with his funny antics involving to shoot himself in one of his testicle. Even the runtime is under 2 hours and that is quite good for this film.
Some things that I didn't like includes the choices that the character of Sobhita takes in the film. I felt quite irritated by her choices and really didn't like them. Also some conservations that the characters have in the film are uninteresting and boring.
The performances are good here where everyone fits in there respective parts. Among the lot, Saif stands out and gives his best performance till date. He really enjoys playing the character and slips inside it quite naturally. He brings the party mood on screen and you enjoy watching him do his silly dance moves and going around in this weird yellow costume. Sobhita is hotty bomb here who as his boyfriend tells her is very gorgeous. She plans to do Ph.d by going abroad and it is a kind of character which is not generally offered to the actress in Bollywood as usually they are just an eye candy with no goals in there life. Vijay Raaz and Deepak Dobriyal as crime partners wanting to make it big are very believable in there parts. Others characters too were good but they don't have much to do as they just come and go but still they are really good in there respective roles with Shivam Patil as Emraan Hashmi fan being my favourite among them.
Overall, I really enjoyed watching Kaalakaandi and I do hope it performs well at the box office. It is not everyday you get a film like this and I hope everyone supports this film. I also know that not everyone will like this film and they will really hate it but we need these new kind of films which explores some unique concepts and give you a memorable ride.
