Mukkabaaz - Movie Review

Cast - Vineet Kumar Singh, Zoya Hussain, Jimmy Shergill, Ravi Kishan

Directed By - Anurag Kashyap

Mukkabaaz is a sports drama film directed by Anurag Kashyap who has also co-written this film. Starring Vineet Kumar in the lead, this film tells the story of UP ka Mike Tyson Shravan (Vineet Kumar Singh) who has a passion for boxing and falls for the beautiful Sunaina Mishra (Zoya Hussain) who happens to be the niece of the Don, Bhagwan Das Mishra (Jimmy Shergill) who is the villain here responsible for suppressing Shravan's dream of becoming a boxer. Will Shravan become a successful boxer? Will Shravan and Sunaina live happily ever after? You need to watch the film to know the answers to these questions.

While the screenplay does not provide anything new here as you have seen this story many times before in many sports or other genre movies, what makes Mukkabaaz a bit different from other films in this genre is its characters. The actress is not just a showpiece here, she does play a significant role in the heroes life and supports him through her unspoken words (she is mute). Vineet too as Shravan is terrific who completely transforms into this terrific bone breaking boxer and delivers a memorable performance. The film is high on the entertainment factor with some light-hearted moments thrown here and there after a few intense scenes. The film has a song which goes like "mushkil hai apna meil priye" (Our unification is difficult) which highlights just how difficult it is for them to get together while a ruthless villain like Bhagwan Das is there but hey, our hero has to fight for his love and his passion. The dusty and dark land of Bareilly is beautifully captured in the lens. The film not only tells about the corruption prevailing in sports, but it also throws light on other significant issues like caste system and orthodox thinking about women which is still present in some parts of India.

My issues with the film is first of all its running time of almost 2 hours and 30 minutes which really makes the film drag during the second half. Sometimes you just wish that it really does move on and get over with. A faster pace could have been appreciated. The background score is bearable and not too memorable. Also I watched this film after seeing so many positive reviews from the critics and audiences alike and that really hyped up the film for me and I think maybe that is the reason that I didn't like this film that much as the many critics or the audience. I liked the film but not really loved it and I definitely think it is a nice sports film with some entertainment but it was overall strictly a good film for me as I did not find anything new here story wise and it was all "seen before" for me.

Performances are terrific here. Vineet Kumar is in his top form and delivers a best performance on screen giving some hard hitting punches. Zoya Hussain is sweet and beautiful who gives a fiery performance and she is someone who is unafraid and stubborn. Jimmy Shergill as Bhagwan Das is menacing and sometimes hateful to watch. Ravi Kishan as the coach is also praiseworthy in his honest portrayal of someone who truly loves his sport.

In the end, Mukkabaaz is a good film with some social commentary thrown in it and is surely worth a punch. Although I didn't love the film like many critics, I did enjoy it in parts and found it as a good film to have come out in the January. Also I would recommend not to get hyped by all the ratings out there as it surely spoiled a lot of fun, at least for me.

My Rating - 3/5
