Padmaavat - Movie Review

Cast - Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor

Directed By - Sanjay Leela Bhansali

So after much protests from the Rajput community, Padmaavat is now finally released in the theaters and I got the opportunity to watch it in the theatre without any problems. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, this is a film that will surely feast your eyes with some stunning cinematography and direction. Based on the poem Padmavat by Malik Muhammad Jayasi, it tells the story of Rani Padmavati who commits jauhar to protect herself from the cruel Allaudin Khilji.

Bhansali does here what he is best known for and that is to create beautiful grand sets and visuals. He paints the film on screen with colours and such artistic passion that from the very first frame you are in awe. The film is high on Rajput's ethics and morals and one wonders why this film was heavily protested from the community as all it does is just praise the Rajput's and there shaan. Bhansali had a tough job to show something to us whose story we are all aware of. Almost everyone knows the story of Padmavati and how it ends but Bhansali pulls off everything gracefully and delivers a stunning and beautiful film that is enjoyable. The costumes are grand and the attention to the detailing is just mind blowing. The film does a good job in transporting us to the 13th century with its authenticity.
The songs are good with "Ek Dil Ek Jaan" being my favorite from the list and the choreography of the song "Ghoomar" is just a treat to watch.

What I also liked in the film are the performances of the cast. Everyone is amazing here. Shahid Kapoor as Ratan Singh is charming and fierce. He smiles and roars with perfection and really looks like a Rajput ruler giving an amazing performance of his career. Deepika Padukone as Padmavati is beautiful and brave and shines through her grand costumes. She has really come a long way as an actor. Of course Ranveer Singh again delivers his best performance on screen, he is menacing and hateful but attracts audience towards him. The scars on his face, his horrible way of eating food and his lust for power demands attention and Ranveer pulls off everything flawlessly. Ranveer as Khilji who does anything to get Padmavati is very convincing in his role. Aditi Rao Hydari as Mehrunisa is naïve and innocent with some hidden courage inside her that is revealed later in the film during a sequence. She is also very good and convincing. I liked Jim Sarbh here who plays Malik Kafur who is a slave general of Khilji and is referred to as someone who is like Khilji's wife. I didn't like him in Raabta but here he was good.

What I didn't like about the film include some romantic moments between Deepika and Shahid because initially it was all very nice and romantic but after some time it felt repeated and unnecessary. Also films ends with Khilji trying to avoid jauhar and he was just about to reach there but Padmavati commits jauhar and the door is closed barring Ranveer from entering inside and the credits start to roll and I wanted to see the affect it created on Khilji as he was unsuccessful in getting something that he desired so much from his heart, at least a scene of few seconds displaying his loss and failure and his reaction could have been appreciated. Also I felt some scenes were edited to display Rajput's in a more heroic manner as it was facing protests and they really wanted to release the film. Some serious scenes became unintentionally funny and didn't quite hit the note.

At almost 2 hours and 30 minutes, Padmaavat can be a really long film for some but if you have created something so beautifully and meticulously, I think it's ok to show it off for sometime. The film really has some stunning visuals and an excellent background score which sends chills down your spine. Definitely at least an one time watch.
