Saawariya - Movie Review
Cast - Ranbir Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Salman Khan, Rani Mukherjee
Directed By - Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Sanjay Leela Bhansali is an acclaimed director who is known to create beautiful visuals and eye candy scenes. Saawariya is also a Bhansali trademark film with all the necessary Bhansali elements present in it. Marking the debut of Ranbir and Sonam Kapoor, this is a musical romantic film that came out in 2007 and was a flop at the box office because you know well, at the same time another film was released alongside it which was Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om. Many audiences preferred to see the Shah Rukh Khan starrer rather than this film. So this film basically tells about Raj (Ranbir Kapoor) who falls head over heels for a girl by the name of Sakina (Sonam Kapoor) who is in love with Imaan (Salman Khan). The film is narrated by Gulabi (Rani Mukherjee) who is in love with Raj.
To begin with, let's talk about the positives here. This film is just beautifully made, and that is a thing you now expect from Bhansali as he is a master in creating breathtaking visuals. He painstakingly creates a fictional city in a fictional world which is relevant with our real world. People's mindset and behaviors are all related to the people's in the real world. Safety of women and general mindset of the people about the prostitutes are highlighted here very intelligently. The reasons for it to not perform well at the box office was that first of all it was released alongside Om Shanti Om which people preferred more. Second thing is that it came out at a time when people were high on happy endings and wanted to see the union of the hero and heroine. Also it is a musical film so you can expect song anytime during a scene and maybe the audience would have eventually gotten bored with it as musical films were not very common and not well known at that time. The film beautifully shows how love can change the character of a person and how even some good hearted selfless persons can do selfish things for love. "Pyaar ke liye qurbaani" and all that things are shown in a not so cliched way. The film is made with lots of love and there is warmth in almost every frame. There is a scene towards the end where the conversation between Ranbir and Sonam takes place through actions and unspoken words, it was one of the most heart touching and beautiful scene in the film.
Talking about negatives, there is this final song in the film where Sonam and Ranbir are walking in the street and I think that was stretched and unnecessary, the film could have been a bit trimmed and ended sooner. Also if you are not a fan of musical films, there are chances you won't like this one either. At times it also feels dragged and you have to make up with the scene by admiring the visuals but it soon gathers pace. The characters are also not fully developed and half baked.
The performance of both Ranbir and Sonam is praiseworthy. For a debutant, they have done an excellent job in portraying their characters. Rani Mukherjee and Salman Khan in their cameos have also done a fantastic job. Ranbir truly deserves his current position as a star as he is really a fantastic actor and a rockstar which he is also referred to as in the film.
Saawariya has blue frames and stunning sets that are admirable which is coupled with some nice performances from its cast and I think it can be watched by the audience who admire Bhansali's grand sets and visuals and also if you are a Ranbir Kapoor fan. Also if you enjoy watching musical romantic movies with some heartbreak, then it is a perfect film for you.
