Annihilation - Movie Review

With gorgeous visuals and a dash of horror, Annihilation is breath taking and scary at the same time. It is not your typical alien invasion film with loads of action. After Ex Machina, Alex Garland successfully delivers another thought provoking sci-fi film.

Cast - Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Oscar Isaac

Directed By - Alex Garland

Genre - Sci-Fi / Horror

I loved Ex Machina and when I got to know that the same director is behind Annihilation, I genuinely got excited to see this film and my wish was successfully granted, thanks to Netflix. Directed by Alex Garland, this film is about five scientists who are sent inside "The Shimmer" which is caused when a meteoroid like thing crashes with the lighthouse as shown at the beginning of the film.

Now, this is not your average alien invasion film where there are random explosions and tons of violence. This is more in the tone of 2001: A Space Odyssey and you can feel the vibe if you have watched it. After unsuccessful attempts at identifying the cause of "The Shimmer", five scientists consisting of only women's are sent to save the day, yeah talk about women empowerment. The film consists of some amazing visuals and breathtaking frames. "The Shimmer" is beautiful on screen but is really a scary place to be. The film has a touch of creepiness and horror to frighten you. When you work in a group, there arises conflicts and differences in opinions and the film addresses it realistically. Everything aside, the best thing about this film is that all the lead characters in the film are fully utilized and none of them are wasted. The cinematography by Rob Hardy is magnificent and the music by Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow is soothing to the ears. This is a good sci-fi film with a complex storyline that should be enjoyed by many. The characters in the film have there own sad backstory and are broke from inside. They are not perfect and the film doesn't want you to empathize with them. Their actions have shaped there past life and the film doesn't want you to feel sorry for them.

The performances are strong with Natalie Portman in her full form delivering a fine act. She is strong, smart and you like watching her doing her thing on screen. Jennifer Jason is fabulous and I also liked her in The Hateful Eight. I also liked Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson and Tuva Novotny alike.

The film is a slow burner and that can put some people off but on the whole, it's a fantastic film and I recommend you to watch it at least once for its sheer brilliance. If you don't like a thought-provoking film with a head-scratching ending and prefer films with mindless action sequences, you may not like Annihilation.
