The Greatest Showman - Movie Review
Good performances and beautiful visuals make The Greatest Showman a great show to watch. It's like a fairytale narrated through the medium of musical.
Cast - Hugh Jackman, Zack Efron, Michelle Williams, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson
Directed By - Michael Gracey
Genre - Musical Drama
Divided between the critics and the audiences, The Greatest Showman had a mixed reception as the critics hated it and the audience loved it. Directed by Michael Gracey, the film stars Hugh Jackman as P.T. Barnum who from his childhood wanted to entertain people with his performance but lacked the necessary platform. We know this from a scene early in the film where a young Barnum makes a little girl laugh with his antics who eventually grows up to be his wife. Her name was Charity (Michelle Williams) who supports him through his ups and downs and even gives him two beautiful daughters who inspire Barnum to create a beautiful world of the circus as we know it now.
I have been fascinated by musicals as the medium of telling a story. There is a greater risk here as if not executed properly, they may come out as boring and unbearable. But execute it perfectly and you would get amazing results like the 2016's La La Land which is one of my favorite musical films. Thankfully, The Greatest Showman comes out as a beautiful antique piece which is admirable and enjoyable much like Barnum's stunning show which brought smiles to the face of its audience. It's like a fairytale with good looking and different kinds of people in it who create magic with there performance on screen. The visuals are an eye candy, thanks to the cinematography of Seamus McGarvey who successfully creates this pretty world. For a musical, the biggest achievement is its songs and The Greatest Showman excels marvelously in that department. Music by John Debney and Joseph Trapanese is alluring and fits perfectly with the scene. The film is very well directed by Michael Gracey and he does a good job in transporting us inside Barnum's show and making us thoroughly enjoy the heavenly performance of its star attractions. One of the better sequence in the film involve Zac Efron and a lady he loves dance to the song "Rewrite the Stars" while they are alone inside the circus.
The performances are sublime. From a self-healing mutant with claws to the visionary of a great show, Hugh Jackman can do any role with ease and is a treat to watch in any role he plays. Zac Efron is admirable with his pleasing looks and wonderful performance. I really liked Keala Settle and wished she had more to do in the film. Zendaya was also delightful but she too had fewer dialogues to say and hence didn't make any significant impact.
Which brings me to my only issue with the film and that is the other characters who were in Barnum's team who performed in the circus. They had almost no dialogues to say. I don't want the whole backstory but a little contribution towards acting rather than being there just for performing would have been good. It eventually makes them like toys who do there job when required. There is one dwarf who plays General in the show and he delivers one or two funny lines but that's it.
There is a critic in the film who also hated Barnum's show and I think he was a reflection of the critics who hated this film, just saying.
