Blackmail movie review - A witty black comedy

Abhinay Deo is back with another black comedy after the successful 2011 film "Delhi Belly". His new movie titled Blackmail follows the story of Dev Kaushal (Irrfan Khan) who upon discovering the affair of his wife, decides to blackmail the person with whom she is having an affair. Filled with humour and exciting twists, Blackmail has Irrfan along with his exceptional performance here.

Cast -  Irrfan Khan, Kirti Kulhari, Divya Dutta, Arunoday Singh

Directed By - Abhinay Deo

Genre - Black Comedy, Thriller, Drama

By the time I had reached the theatre for this movie, only three tickets were left, and thankfully I got the chance to grab the last ticket remaining. So, I got the chance to watch Blackmail, and I am glad to say that it was worth the while. This film has an interesting concept on the paper, and Abhinay Deo makes sure that it translates as exciting and enjoyable on the big screen too. He succeeds in his attempt, and for the most part, Irrfan should be praised as he doesn't let you lose focus from the screen. This is a film that is filled with wittiness and humour, and while some scenes are so hilarious that you will be in splits at other times, you may be grinning at the smartness of the plot and how it all ties up to the finale. Deo taps into the life of a middle-class individual who suffers some daily problems like EMI, loans and other things that leave him in frustration at the end of the day. I had read some reviews before watching this film and found many critics complaining that the film was too long, but that was not the problem with me as the film hooked me throughout its runtime and I was thoroughly engaged with its plot. Maybe this is a thing that may vary from individual to individual, but a film feels long or dragged when nothing major is going on the screen, and hence audience feels it as dull, but Blackmail kept me engaged and entertained and was able to sustain my view until the credits started rolling. This film also indirectly showcases the dark side of the new technology and how it can be used as a weapon against anyone. Blackmail tells about the human psychological behaviour as to how it changes in a person depending upon the situation and how there is a chameleon inside every person ready to change his/her colour according to his personal needs and benefits.

My issues with the film were that the trailers did show a little too much and if only they had restricted themselves, this could have been a little more unpredictable. Also during a particular scene towards the end, Irrfan's character takes a specific decision which I had guessed but Abhinay Deo spoon feeds us that thing, and I hate when a film spoon-feeds its audience as it shows that the director doesn't think his audience as smart. Also, a song featuring Urmila Matondkar although did try to give an insight into a particular character was not enjoyable enough.

Performance wise, there are no disappointments here as everyone did there part correctly. Irrfan Khan again proves as to why he is considered as the greatest actor working in the industry right now. His unique way of acting brings a certain charm and depth to the character he plays. Kirti Kulhari who was last seen in the Akshat Verma directed "Kaalakandi" was also sweet and convincing in her part. Arunoday Singh manages to tickle your bones with his funny antics and humorous lines. Divya Dutta as a drunken wife of Arunoday Singh's character is loud and most of the time under the influence of alcohol. She too was a delight to watch. The actors who played the parents of Kirti Kulhari's character were the highlight as they were hilarious and made you laugh out loud whenever they were on screen. I did hope that if only they had gotten more screen time, then it would have been nice. Gajraj Rao as the detective with wig also provides comic relief, and you may even recognise him from the online youtube channel "TVF" where he has acted in some videos. There is a creepy guy who tells if a girl is virgin or not just by looking at her. Omi Vaidya is back after a long time, but his character hasn't changed much. He has an affinity towards toilet papers and believes that they will revolutionise the world. He does have a passion for toilet papers which is evident with his long visionary speeches about them.

In the end, Blackmail may not be as perfect as "Delhi Belly", but it is also not as trippy as "Kaalakandi". I loved both of them, and I also liked Blackmail, and I hope you don't miss this film. Ignore the negative reviews and give it a try as there are chances you will also enjoy this film as I have.
