Hush Movie Review - Trapped In Silence
A deaf and mute author gets trapped inside her house isolated somewhere in the woods when a masked killer with sinister intentions arrives at her doorsteps. Her objective is simple - to survive or to die at the hands of this masked killer.
Cast - Kate Siegel, John Gallagher Jr., Michael Trucco, Samantha Sloyan
Directed By - Mike Flanagan
Genre - Horror, Thriller
Maddie (Kate Siegel) was not always a woman with hearing and speaking disability. At first, it was temporary, but it was only when the corrective surgery got wrong, she acquired the disability permanently. But that doesn't come in her way of becoming a published author and she does write remarkable stories as we are told in the beginning when her friend and neighbour Sarah (Samantha Sloyan) comes to visit her and returns the book that she had borrowed. She says that she loved the book and considered Maddie's novel as something brilliant. Although Maddie has lost her ability to speak and hear, what she hasn't lost and has something in abundance is courage which she fearlessly displays throughout the film. We are introduced to the masked killer (John Gallagher Jr.) who first kills Sarah and now has plans to kill Maddie.
Hush is a remarkable entry in this survival horror genre, and at times it does succeed in keeping you at the edge of your seat. There were times when my heart pounded nervously, and I found myself shouting to the character not to do some things she does or warn her when she dangerously and unknowingly comes close to the killer. This film involved me thoroughly in it, and I was deeply invested in the scary events that unfolded in front of me. I loved the female lead character and found myself in love with her. There are things she does so bravely that I would have avoided at all costs if placed in the situation and by the end of the film, I was impressed and had developed a certain liking towards the character. I love when a movie shows a female protagonist as someone so valiant and daring that she manages herself without any support from her male counterparts. The short runtime of the film makes sure that it never loses steam and doesn't drag unnecessarily. The screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Kate Siegel tweaks the "seen before" story a little and shows something creepy filled with tension on screen. It is not something original or something you have never seen before; it is the strong direction and treatment the movie gets that makes it scary enough to give you chills and provide you with a good time. The film has sparse dialogues and relies more on the visual horror rather than the spoken one.
The performances are again something that can be counted towards the positives of the film. Kate Siegel was very convincing in her part and delivered a fantastic performance. John Gallagher Jr. was creepy enough to make you stay away from him. Samantha Sloyan and Michael Trucco as couples didn't have much to do in the film but were fine whenever present in the frame.
The direction of Mike Flanagan is pretty amazing, and he has previously given some good movies like Ouija: Origin Of Evil, Gerald's Game, Oculus and is now working on adapting Shirley Jackson's novel The Haunting Of Hill House as a series for Netflix. I am excited about it as the director has proven himself to be capable of delivering excellent movies.
As in the case of the horror films, this film too has some character choices that you find dumb but when compared to other movies, the decisions made here come out as more logical and believable. There is a scene in the film that was about to come as a shock but turned out to be a dream sequence which is something I hate in the horror films.
Overall, Hush is a good horror film, and as someone who is a fan and loves watching movies of this genre, I recommend you to check out this film, and I am sure you will have a good time with it. I watched this movie on my TV during the night with lights off, and I was alone in the room, so that's a pretty amazing experience. It is available on Netflix so go check it out.
