Red Sparrow Movie Review - Flying Like A Sparrow
A Russian ballerina meets with a career-ending injury and is hired by her uncle to be trained as a spy to make contact with a CIA agent in the hope of discovering the identity of a mole. In return, he offers full medical care for her mother.
Cast - Jennifer Lawrence, Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Jeremy Irons, Charlotte Rampling
Directed By - Francis Lawrence
Genre - Spy Thriller
Red Sparrow is based on a novel of the same name which was written by a former CIA operative Jason Matthews. As the book is written by someone who was in CIA, this film feels authentic in its portrayal of the methods taken up by the secret services to gather information from someone. Dominika Egorova (Jennifer Lawrence) is sent to become a Russian operative known as "Sparrow" who use seduction as a tool to acquire information from the targets. Apparently, Dominika has what it requires to do the job and hence gets recruited in the service early during her training before her classmates.
Some scenes in the movie are too brutal for the audience to watch and you might end up walking away from it as many people had during its screening. I would like to commend Jennifer Lawrence for performing some awkward scenes in the film that would make you cringe and are challenging to perform on screen. With last year's Mother! and now Red Sparrow, Jennifer Lawrence proves herself to be that actress who can fearlessly do so much on screen that you can only applaud her confidence as she pulls off something that is very difficult to do in front of a camera. The other actors too deserve praise for whatever they do in the film, and I can only imagine how difficult it could be filming those scenes. There are many sexual disturbing scenes that I was surprised to see, but the film doesn't glorify it in any way. I loved the music by James Newton Howard as he had given one of his best score for the film that elevates it to a much better level.
Although the film has its positives and some interesting twists and turns attached to it, there are some very major drawbacks in the movie with the length being the main issue for me. It is a very long film, or it does feel like a very long film as it stretches beyond the limits and bores you at times. I found myself losing interest from the plot and checking my watch during many times in the film. It just drags too much and fails to hold your attention consistently. I was also not able to fully digest Dominika's journey from a successful ballerina to a Russian operative as it felt more like nepotism and at most times unreal to me. You are not able to fully understand the lead character as some decisions she makes are very unclear, and I think that is because you don't know what is going inside her head, she is confusing. We are kept outside her mind and hence are not fully able to connect with her. The performance of Joel Edgerton was fantastic, and he did an excellent job in playing his character in the movie.
In the end, I found Red Sparrow enticing and at the same time confusing not because it is difficult to grasp, but it doesn't let you come inside it. I didn't always connect with the protagonist's decision, but I liked how they filmed some awkward scenes in the movie without glorifying it.
