Kaminey Movie Review - Chasing Your Dreams
Two twins turn against each other and live a separate life far from each other. While one suffers from lisps, the other one stutters. When one of them comes across a guitar suitcase containing cocaine, there follows a serious of criminal events which wind up with each other in the end.
Cast - Shahid Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Amole Gupte
Directed By - Vishal Bhardwaj
Genre - Caper Thriller, Romance, Comedy
Charlie (Shahid Kapoor) has lisps and Guddu (Shahid Kapoor again) stutters. After an unfortunate family event, they split up and live a separate life away from each other. When a jockey deceives Charlie, and he loses his life savings of Rs.100,000, he sets out to take revenge, and on his quest, he stumbles upon a guitar suitcase containing cocaine. He decides to steal and sell them to get money for fulfilling his dream of becoming a bookmaker at the racecourse.
The combo of Vishal Bhardwaj and Shahid Kapoor is phenomenal, and it can be proved with Kaminey and also with Haider. These two have been one of the most amazing films to have come out from the Bollywood. For this film, Vishal takes inspiration from directors like Quentin Tarantino and films like Pulp Fiction. This does not make Kaminey a rip off of this movies; instead this film stands on its own grounds and has its own story to tell. The film packs in some symbolic scenes like Charlie inaugurating his dream in front of a crowd or in another scene he is shown running like a horse towards his destination and not losing any focus. I was not expecting these scenes in the movie, and I was pleased on seeing them. The frames too are dark and dull much like the lives of the characters in the film who seek brightness in there life. Bhardwaj takes us deep inside the dark corners of the criminal world and hits us with truth and life of people living in the slum areas of Mumbai. He puts two imperfect brothers as the main characters who seek a perfect life for themselves in the city of dreams. There is humour spread out in the movie so that this film doesn't become too dark and hence there is a balance in the tone of the film. Cinematography by Tassaduq Hussain is completely mind-blowing here as he captures the mood of the film and brings it out effectively. Music by Vishal Bhardwaj too makes up for the thrill of this film. This is one of those films that require your complete attention, and you have to be focused in order to understand it completely. Its narration jumping from characters to characters is executed neatly and makes up for a perfect crime film to watch.
The performances of all the cast in the movie are outstanding. Not a single character goes unnoticed as everyone was terrific in the film. Shahid Kapoor pulls off his double act with ease, and it's no wonder that he is one of the most excellent actors to be working in the industry. Priyanka Chopra is recognised by the world now but also back then she was a fabulous actress, and in Kaminey, she was in her finest form. Amole Gupte was also menacing in his part and was able to build up tension when on screen. Chandan Roy Sanyal as Charlie's brother from another mother Mikhail is also a highlight of the film.
My issues with the films are minor, or you can also call them nitpicks like the film feels a bit long after some time and towards the end of the movie when there goes on gunfight between the police and the different gangs in slo-mo, Guddu makes a decision out of love that I thought was probably careless but these are all the things that can be ignored for a film which is so much more than these little nitpicks.
Kaminey is one of the finest films out there and is recommended by me. Do not miss out on this one and watch it as soon as possible, if you haven't.
