Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran Movie Review - In The Heart Of The Desert

Parmanu tells the story of Pokhran during the year 1998 when Indian Army conducted a nuclear test by overcoming several difficulties in their way. This movie is cooked with a mixture of masala and patriotism to serve your hearts.

Cast - John Abraham, Diana Penty, Boman Irani, Anuja Sathe, Yogendra Tiku, Vikas Kumar, Aditya Hitkari

Directed By - Abhishek Sharma

Genre - Action, Drama

This adapted and dramatised version of the actual events that took place in 1998 in Pokhran relies much on its dialogue baazi to invoke the patriotism within. The film plays it safe by adopting the same old version of the story we have seen several times. Capt. Ashwat Raina is given a second chance to prove his worth when all the mistakes of the politicians on conducting the nuclear test are blamed on him resulting in his suspension from the job. Himanshu Shukla (Boman Irani) is the one who offers another chance to Ashwat, and he makes a plan of testing the nuclear bombs of which he gets the inspiration from watching an episode of Mahabharat on TV. Thus, he names his team with the names of the five Pandavas and heads out to complete the mission and make his nation proud.

Parmanu has all the ingredients required to make a masala film with enough amount of humour and patriotism thrown in it that will be able to entertain the masses and it has its moments of fun. For a film involving a mission as crucial as the nuclear testing, it has very little tension present in it, and for the most of the part, it breezes through all the hurdles that come in between. The film never manages to be an edge of the seat thriller and generally prefers going towards the safe side. The makers wanted the film to be enjoyable by the masses, and that can be clearly seen in the movie but that would not be a problem if the film had managed to provide a sense of tension throughout as the task at hand was risky. Instead, you feel the importance of it only during the crucial time of the finale. The other thing that takes you out of the movie and makes you realise that you are actually watching a film in a theatre is the real clips from the news channels that are inserted within the movie that comes on screen during specific intervals which again removes all the involvement and anxiousness from the film. It's hard to believe John and Diana in the movie as they have no speck of dirt present on their faces and are perfectly styled even in the presence of a scorching sun working somewhere in the desert.

John Abraham who has also produced this film and gives his heart out to delivers a fantastic performance as expected from him. Diana Penty is there with her beautiful looks and tries her best to provide some weight to the film with her performance. From the remaining cast, Aditya Hitkari as Dr Viraf Wadia seemed to be enjoying his presence in the movie. Vikas Kumar was believable in his role as Major Prem.

Giving credit where it is due, it is good that Bollywood is making films like these that focus on celebrating the unsung heroes of our nation but not every movie comes out to be Raazi. Nevertheless, if you are a John Abraham fan or want to spend your weekend knowing about the real heroes of our nation, Parmanu may be the place to go as in the end, you might end up overlooking its issues and will come out of the theatre feeling satisfied.
