Secret Window Movie Review - Overcoming The Writer's Block
A writer living in his cabin at Tashmore Lake in upstate New York faces a threat from a person who accuses him of plagiarising his story. At first, the writer does not take him seriously, but when he starts giving life-threatening warnings, the writer decides to get rid of him.

Secret Window is based on the Stephen King's novel of the name Secret Window, Secret Garden and tells the story of Mort Rainey (Johnny Depp) a published writer who apart from writing loves sleeping. For the first few minutes of the film, we are shown a successful and lazy writer who is attracted towards his sofa and sleeps like there is no tomorrow. A maid comes and cleans his cabin, and if not for her, his cabin would have looked like trash. Rainey chooses to live far from the city in his cabin at Tashmore Lake because of two reasons - 1. He is suffering from a writer's block and wants to live alone to focus on his writing, 2. At the beginning of the film we are shown that Railey catches her wife Amy (Maria Bello) cheating on him with a man named Ted (Timothy Hutton) and now wants to be far away from her. His peaceful life in the cabin takes a dramatic turn for worse when John Shooter (John Turturro) enters into his life and accuses him of plagiarising his story.
Adapting a Stephen King novel for a film has not been an easy task for the filmmakers as they turn out to be a huge flop and fail to deliver the amusement that the novels successfully provide. But this is not always the case as we have some great movies adapted from the Stephen King's books that have been vastly successful like The Shining (1980) and IT (2017) to name a few. Secret Window, on the other hand, is not a bad film, and I think it was fairly well adapted from its source material. David Koepp gives his best in writing and directing this film, and it is evident that he respected and made this film with a passion. There is a style in the way camera moves in the movie taking us inside the cabin through the "secret" window which is discovered by Rainey's wife when she visited the cabin a long time ago. The background score of the film feels nostalgic and reminds you of 1980's. This movie released in 2004 and Pirates Of The Caribbean released in 2003 and hence it is noticeable that Depp carries the character of Jack Sparrow in this film. His quirky actions like that of Sparrow's are visible in the movie. I am not bragging, but since I have watched a lot of movies like this or of this genre, I was able to guess the ending, and hence it didn't come as a shock to me. There are a fair amount of hints given in the film, and if you can catch them, then you too will be able to guess the twisting finale. This film has some odd comedic moments which makes it strange and satisfying to watch.
The film has a wonderful start which is riveting and a chilling finale that is very enjoyable, it's in the middle that it seems to drag since Rainey is going through the divorce, there is his domestic struggle that stretches the film in between and it shifts from the thriller to the domestic battle and then again to the thriller. Whenever we are in the cabin, there is a sense of anxiety and fear present with us, but whenever he leaves the cabin, all the tension is lost and you want him to go back to the cabin as the part with John Shooter is more interesting than the domestic struggle part. I know the divorce part is added to provide depth to the character and it does its job as you sympathise with the character, but it's just that it goes on and on for a long time and stretches the film for too long. Johnny Depp gives an underrated performance here, and he was fantastic in the movie. Charles Dutton was very cool in his part of the private investigator Ken Karsch.
Secret Window is not the worst Stephen King adaptation as I have seen in some reviews online. Although the film has a lot of flaws in it, that doesn't take away the pleasure of watching it, and I recommend you to check it out if you wouldn't have because of some negative reviews from critics.
